No signal

Just got a second hand skyhd box. Not digital. Hooked up to the satellite dish and saying no signal. Any ideas? Says locked on signal in settings. Cant check for a signal status as not an official sky customer. Tried to sign up to sky but cant seem to do this for old analogue sky dish sky hd 🤷‍♀️. Any help gratefully received.

You do know that you'll not be able to pair a viewing card to the box, thus you'll only be able to view the free channels

Is the dish compatible with the box?

Re: No signal

How would i find out if dish is compatible with dish? Is there any thing i am looking for to find this out? Moved into a property with really unstable copper wifi and digital tv just awful. Thought i could solve problem by going back to a sky+ box and hooked it up to the back of my skybox.

If the dish was previously used with Sky Q then there is a 90% chance the LNB on the dish arm would need replacing unless it had a Hybrid LNB that has sockets for Sky Q and Sky Plus

Note: Freeview is diffferent from FreeSAT, also the box will not be able to use its hard drive

Re: No signal

I have no idea what an lnb arm is. Does freesat still provide the basic channels?

There are only 2 parts to a satellite dish

1. The dish that refelcts the signal

2. The arm that holds the LNB where the coax cables plug in to, and the signal is focus to

Freesat channels: https://www.freesat.co.uk/tv-guide?userNid=28801

The plugs an sockets for satellite dishes/boxes are standard

Sky no longer provide new subscriptions for Sky Plus, their supported st system is Sky Q but that has not got much more life left in it as everything is going to the Internet (Sky Glass/Sky Stream)

hi @Roorabbit

Just out of interest,  do you really mean an old analogue sky dish -  a solid round one rather than the oval mesh dishes ?

If so the dish is extremely unlikely to  be pointing at those used by Freesat & SKY

SKY analogue came from Astra 1 at 19.2 E rather than Freesat / SKY diigtal at 28.2 E)

@Annie+UK  has given you all the info about support & SKY Subs etc.

As an aside the LNB stands for Low Noise Block - which I know doesn't mean anything more to customers but as @Annie+UK  mentions it is the electronic bit that collects the signal reflected onto it from the dish

Re: No signal

Sorry guys. Not up on my proper lingo of the Sky/sat world. Was loving digital tv when i lived in a field in the middle of nowhere. Now i have moved to 'civilisation' i have had to take some technological steps back and try to reconnect with the analogue world. This seems to be fast becoming obscelete so not sure what to do next 🤷‍♀️

Thanks @Roorabbit

In which case, as @Annie+UK indicated, it is quite possible/likely that the LNB is one that as been changed to work with SKY Q which is not compatible with a SKY HD box

(although there is a vague possibility that a very few channels could show but on  'wrong' frequencies)

BTW we expect that the majority of customers have no idea what an LNB is

Re: No signal

Does sky q work via an internet connection?

Sky Q uses both a satellite dish and a broadband connection
