Not true I repair old sky plus hd boxes all the time, just because sky can't fix anything doesn't mean it cannot be repaired, find a local TV engineer and they can replace the harddrive easily

The cost of a new HDD and the repair will be more than purchasing a secondhand box

It's not worth the bother and cost. Sky+ is legacy hardware, at least 7 years old and Sky will generally do you a good, if not no-cost deal to upgrade to the current Sky Q platform,
