FP1997

"What movie should I watch for Valentine's Day?" Good question. Yes, you could scour our Valentine's Collection (available on TV and Sky Go), but where's a list when you need it?
Here's what to watch, based on your mood!
"I want a classic, bitter-sweet romance that sweeps me off my feet!"
P.S. I Love You
- Heartbroken widow Hilary Swank is guided through her grief with letters arranged by late husband Gerard Butler (2007)
- My take: full of laughs, and sweet moments, it's sure to leave you full.
Dear John
- Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum star as a couple struggling to keep their romance alive when he goes to war after 9/11 (2010)
- My take: a tough watch, but Amanda Seyfried can do no wrong.
Ghost
- Patrick Swayze stars as a murdered banker whose ghost walks the Earth to protect girlfriend Demi Moore (1990)
- My take: a slow start, but that clay scene is worth waiting for.
Breakfast at Tiffany's
- Iconic romance based on Truman Capote's novella, as Audrey Hepburn stars in her defining role as socialite Holly Golightly (1961)
- My take: nothing is as iconic as Gossip Girl's remake of the Cat scene.
Mamma Mia
- Meryl Streep belts out the ABBA tunes in this adaptation of the musical, which sees a bride-to-be try to learn the identity of her dad (2008)
- My take: who knew we needed Meryl in dungarees singing 80's classics? WE DID.
"Honestly? I'm after some hefty belly laughs."
Notting Hill
- Bookshop owner Hugh Grant forms an unlikely romance with superstar actress Julia Roberts in this hit Richard Curtis romcom (1999)
- My take: LOVE LOVE LOVE Rhys Ifans.
50 First Dates
- Adam Sandler finds his perfect match in Drew Barrymore. Everything is wonderful until the next day, when he discovers she's forgotten everything about him (2004)
- My take: Adam Sandler makes easy bank on these types of movies, but check out Punch, Drunk, Love.
My Best Friend's Wedding
- Classic romcom starring Julia Roberts as a food critic who finally faces up to her feelings for long-time friend Dermot Mulroney (1997)
- My take: there's something so feral about a woman wronged
13 Going on 30
- An uncool youngster dreams of being an adult, and her wish comes true when she wakes one day as a hotshot career woman (2004)
- My take: if you ignore the freaky friday element, Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo are a perfect match
Groundhog Day
- Bill Murray is the cynical weatherman forced to repeat the same day over and over again. Is romancing Andie MacDowell the key to living the day right? (1993)
- My take: it would've been funny if this movie was just 4 hours long to trick people
"I'm in the mood for a good cry, just make me feel things for the love of God!"
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- In a pioneering procedure, Kate Winslet erases ex Jim Carrey from her memory. But can he bring himself to do the same? (2004)
- My take: I will genuinely never be the same after this mind-blowingly gorgeous movie
Supernova
- A couple travel across England to see friends and family in the midst of a dementia diagnosis. Emotional drama starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci (2020)
- My take: how dare they use Colin against us?!
Eternal Beauty
- Two-time Oscar-nominee Sally Hawkins stars in this thoughtful comedy-drama as Jane - a young woman struggling with schizophrenia who finds love (2019)
- My take: the kind of movie where you're grinning through tears.
The English Patient
- As WWII rages, two lives intertwine when a man badly burned in a plane crash is cared for by a young nurse in a derelict Italian monastery (1996)
- My take: that's what underneath Voldemort's nose slits? HELLO
Life Is Beautiful
- Moving Oscar-winning drama about an Italian Jew who tries to shield his son from the horrors of their Nazi prison camp (1997)
- My take: one of my all-time favourite movies - heart-wrenching and beautifully funny.
