I've received my device and connected it but it's saying checking your status and has been for 20 minutes now

The pucks can be pretty slow - it depends on your broadband speed and the latency to the Sky server you're connected to. If it looks like it's frozen then just turn it off at the wall socket for a few seconds then power on and try again.
