The sales person selling me the box assured me that I would get the Grannd Slam tennis matches, even showing me something on his ipad to prove it. I can't even get the ATP/WTA matches without opting in to pay more.

Well, Yes, you need a Sports subscription to receive Sky Sports channels.
Although, the Australian Open is on Eurosport/Discovery+ not Sky Sports.

So I've been had by a greedy salesperson! Thank you for your reply, which is greatly appreciated.

Give Sky a ring - you can cancel without charge within 31 days of activation.
Might be worth submitting a formal complaint about sales tactics here:

Thanks a lot. I will contact Sky< The only reason I went to the Sky sales desk was so that I could ask questions, which I couldn't do if buying the box online! I could have sat in the house and not got the tennis instead of dragging myself to the sales desk at the shopping centre! Thanks again 😊

Sports content on Sky has always been a premium service at extra cost, though: that's how the brand was built.
If the salesperson said you 'could' get such things, then that's technically correct.

Sadly most salespeople from most companies will tell you what you want to hear, even if it's not quite the truth.
If it's just tennis that you're after then it may be worth looking to see if your smart TV has the Discovery+ app already installed on it. You can subscribe direct without needing to be with Sky and can watch all manner of sports on the Eurosport channels and TNT Sports.
Also look for the NOW TV app - which allows you to stream tennis and all manner of other sports on Sky Sports channels for a lower monthly fee with no long term commitment.
If your smart TV doesn't have either of these apps available then a simple Amazon Firestick plugged into your TV will allow you to install them.
