Sky Q box judders when using Disney+

Hi everyone,

First time poster, but long time lurker! This place can be helpful for tips and tricks. I have a question, so thought I'd better join the community.

I've just got a brand new Sky Q box after the Hard Drive in my other box suddenly went kaput after about 6 years. Annoying that all my recordings are gone, but I think in this day and age of catch-up, it's possibly not as catostrophic as it might have been a few years ago.

My question is:

I know from reading this forum that the newer Sky Q boxes allow apps to be in 4k UHD. I logged into my Disney+ account to test this yesterday, but the screen keeps going black every few seconds or so. I've turned "judder reduction" on and off in the settings and it makes no difference.

Any ideas from anyone? In the few seconds per time you can see something on the screen, the 4k looks GREAT, especially now with the Dolby Atmos included, it just adds to the experience.

I would like to watch Disney+ through my Q box going forward, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

My Q box Software Version number is: Q220.000.23.00L (5lrke0s)

My Hardware Version number is: 32B108

Thanks for any help you can provide

@starscream84

Are you using a high speed HDMI cable? How long is it?

4K HDR signals need a high bandwidth fast HDMI cable (shorter than 3 metres preferably) to allow the signal to pass smoothly to your TV. The HDMI cable that came with your Q box should be sufficient but you can pick up alternative high speed HDMI cables from Amazon for less than £10.

I'd advise keeping judder reduction turned on for apps, particularly Netflix, Prime, Apple TV+ and Disney+ as they often will be outputting content at different frame rates which the Q box cannot match, so judder reduction outputs everything at 60Hz to make it a bit smoother.

Most people, for the best picture quality, usually use a tv's internal apps, not the SkyQ ones.

You don't state the make or model of your tv but to watch your preferred apps you might need to adjust the tv's own motion settings..

Re: Sky Q box judders when using Disney+

Hi guys,

I can't quote replies on my mobile for some reason, but @SlenderRobert here is the HDMI I use:

I've now put Sky's HDMI cable into the Sky Q box and the screen still keeps going black.

My TV by the way is a:

Samsung UE58AU7110KXXU 58

Thanks

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

Use the inbuilt apps - they will be tuned for the host.

The Q app is designed for maximum connectivity and will 'force' video modes to that different to the source material which will introduce artefacts such as juddering.

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

Re: Sky Q box judders when using Disney+

Any other tips on this?

I get what you're all saying about using my TVs inbuilt apps (they're what I use for Disney+ etc at the moment), but I really wanted to have the Dolby Atmos set-up for my new Sky Q box.

Cheers
