Sky Q Mini - won’t connect first time

Hello,

 

I have a new sky q mini box. I've turned it on and it is working but when I try and connect it to my main sky q box nothing happens. When I follow the QR code it gives, it seems to assume that this is not the first time you've connected and I don't get any of the same messages. The box is one storey up from the main box, but I only have a small house so I would have thought it should reach and I can't easily move the TV around to test if distance is the problem.
