Sky Q Mini Box getting very hot

Hi.

I've just got off the phone with the Sky Technical dept, who had agreed to send me a new Sky Q Mini Box as my current box is getting to temperatures above 33 degrees C, which can't be normal, but found they couldn't arrange a replacement as they couldn't locate my enail address. Why, I know not, but the young lady told me to post on this forum, and someone could escalate the issue or assist.

I've had the Sky Q box and Sky Q Mini Box for less than two weeks, and one one occation the mini box said it couldn't connect to the main Sky Q box, but after switching off and on again, it worked okay.

Both Sky Q box and Sky Q Mini Box are seated on hard surfaces, with ample ventilation above, side and back.

To be clear, it's the Mini Box that has the problem. The main box is fine.

I'm not sure how this works, but can someone from Sky assist?

Well firstly the escalation process is currently switched off and will be unavailable until sometime next week. I would suggest calling Sky again and you'll obviously speak to a different agent. I'm surprised the agent told you to post on here as it's obviously a fire risk so hopefully they advised you to disconnect it. 

Alternatively post back on this thread next week and we may be able to help you further.

@AliZee   This is the temperature gradient that I measured across the top surface of my Sky Q mini around 5 years ago, it is still working without any known problems.

Running a quick scan across its top surface this afternoon, with an ambient room temperature of 27 degrees, provided a peak temperature measurement from its 'heat conducting plastic' top surface of 42 degrees.

That's interesting. So faultly Sky Q mini boxes are a common thing, that operate in dangerous heat ranges. Good to know.

Remember, that heat is generated with electricity you're paying for, so I'd get it replaced if I were you.

My illustration of the temperature gradient, when measured with an infra red thermometer is typical of a perfectly normal Sky Q mini, it uses its thermally conductive case to cool the internal components and is operating well within the normal thermal parameters of a Sky Q mini.

How would you consider those temperatures to be 'dangerous'?

The flashpoint of paper is, for example, two hundred and thirty three degrees Celsius.

Hi @AliZee  It is perfectly normal. It has been over 30 degrees C outside!

I work  on the design and manufacture of industrial electrical and electronic control cubicles for the power generation sector, and any component within a cubicle generating that amount of heat would be replaced immediately. According to the specs, the upper operating perameter of a Sky Q Mini Box is 35 degrees C. If the skin is 41, the internal temperature will be higher. Most electronic components begin to break down above 35 degrees, and contain chemicals you don't want to breath in because they're dangerous. Replace your box or don't. Sorry I bothered you. Won't post here again.

Hi @AliZee   Considering the amount of electronics in a modern car, leaving it out in the summer sun reaches ridiculous temperatures.

@AliZee not to mention computers where a processor can reach 60/70 degrees playing games and some processors are rated for  up to 90 degrees and above.

Being honest 35 degrees is not even at our body temperature so would think it must be higher than 35 before electronics start breaking down
