Nice simple question, hopefully a simple answer!
Assuming I have the right tv to display UHD HDR content, does the sky q version of the apple tv+ app display in UHD HDR or would the picture from a dedicated streaming box be better?

@PAYNE.DAVID no reason why it shouldn't unless you have the non HDR Sky Q box.
Have you tried watching any UHD/HDR content via the Appletv+ app to see if the HDR popup appears.
If you are still doubting I can provide screenshots if you give me the title of the programme or film

My issue is apple tv+ picture quality on sky q box. I've just enabled the apple TV+ this week. I'm currently watching the series invasion and the picture quality is probably less than SD. My sky q box is hard wired, and my speed is 70mbs. I've looked everywhere to change the settings ( if it can be done) and the only one is I can see is to turn on sd only for slow internet on the apple settings. My TV is a Sony bravo and the video settings is 1080 and my sky q box is also set to 1080. I've also searched the internet for answers but can't find anything.

1080 is sdr, not hdr. For hdr the sky box should be set to 2160p https://www.sky.com/help/articles/setting-up-ultra-hd
According to here apple tv is uhd or hdr https://www.sky.com/help/articles/watching-sky-q-in-ultra-hd
All appletv content was actually converted to HDR10+ last year.
However I prefer to use my own tv's apps as they can result in better PQ.

My TV is 1080, if I set the q box to 2160 it says not available.

@Phillipjames Why are you trying to watch 4k UHD on Apple Tv+ if you only have a HD TV or am I missing something 🤔
Your TV will only display upto 1080 that's why 2160 isn't available.

Yes my TV will only display 1080. But apple TV+ is only displaying SD at 480, if it was 720 (hd) it wouldn't be too bad. And yes my settings say no to SD.

He's not trying to watch UHD. The OP was a different person.

Does the ATV+ app show you the bitrate it's able to stream at? Like netflix does?

I'm afraid not, there's very little you can play with in settings.
