iPad or drawing tablet advice

Hi am really hoping someone can help cause am hopeless with technology.

So my 11yr old son loves to draw. He uses paper and small canvas and just loves it. He’s taking about having a tablet device with pen to draw on and would like this for Xmas…. Now he’s only 11 and this is a very new hobby so don’t want to spend a fortune. He’s saw a remarkable tablet on YouTube (of course he has 🙄) but feel this is more advanced than for a beginner wanting to draw.

Can anyone advice me on drawing tablet, iPad or graphics tablet. I’ve not a clue. Would be used for drawing and writing stories etc
