Very little signal this month on and off

My signal is very unpredictable, I can go hours with no signal. Sometimes it shows signal but I can't receive calls (it says on the callers phone number not recognized or can't take your call). 

Data on and off when out and about and can go periods with no data.

Does the signal improve is you change from 4G to 3G ?
