Using my phone abroad (Cyprus)

The £2 a day roaming passport seems expensive, would I be best to turn roaming off and utilise hotel and local wifi?

Yes @Cassie229  you can. I always turn roaming and mobile data off and activate flight mode before leaving the uk (if you wait til you land then you will incur charges) then turn on WiFi when free WiFi available.

@Cassie229

As you're going to Cyprus also see the bottom of this link about accidental roaming…
https://www.sky.com/help/articles/sky-mobile-roaming-destinations-and-charges

One to watch out for: Sometimes mobile phone signals are picked up across country borders.

If your phone picks up the signal of a different provider when you’re near a border or cruise port, then you might be charged different roaming rates.

Common holiday destinations where this can happen are where an EU country borders a non-EU country, resulting in additional roaming charges.

Location: Could accidentally connect to:
Corfu (Greece) Albania
Cyprus (Greece) Turkey (Northern Cyprus)
Kos / Rhodes (Greece) Turkey
France Monaco
France Andorra

To help avoid this:

  • Always check the name of the network provider on your phone before using it. If you’ve connected to a network from a different country for the first time, you’ll get a Welcome text.
  • Turn off data roaming in your phone’s settings.
  • Avoid making calls or sending texts.
