Upgrading my phone

When choosing an upgrade do i automatically retain the same number

No.  If you select a new dataplan and activate it then you'll have 2 plans. 

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

Yes if all you do is to upgrade the phone so you do not order a new data plan.
