Phone not working abroad

My phone will not work abroad (canaries) tried all online help. (In which they send me an activation setting but obviously cant recieve the text) Cant phone up as cant call either. Usually upon landing i fet a text straight away and it works. I did get the text about 2 hours after arriving and it worked for around 4 hours then stopped. No signal at all and keep getting a pop up saying refreshing sim data (which is draining my battery too) Im travelling alone so could really do with it working for google maps and uber. Have you tried getting your phone to search for all available networks to see if it will connect to a different one ?
