No signal when abroad

As usual I'm having problems when traveling with my sky network. I got my welcome message when I arrived in italy and worked for a few hours and now no signal. Done trouble shooting, settings are correct and turned phone off and on multiple times. 
sky's best advice is to call which funny enough you can't when you don't have signal and I'm completely unable to be put through to a human through the chat bot. 
once went over a month with no signal when travelling and no compensation. Getting very sick of recurring problems and how difficult it is to solve them. I don't need to spend my time on holiday or when I should be working trying to fix my mobile signal for the hundredth time. 
please advise if anybody knows how to signal working again.
