I ordered a phone upgrade but haven't signed it because I would like to know my options without sending back my old phone as I've read some bad reviews about people being charged after returning their old phones

Upgrade and pay off the balance which would be added to your next bill or swap by sending your phone back, once you have your new one, to cover what's left on your contract.

If you don't send your old phone back then you have to keep paying for it.
The value of your returned phone is deducted - it may not be enough to clear the balance.
