What network protocol does the Sky Go app use for the Virtual Remote function?

I have a vLan segmented home network and my phone is on a different vLan and wifi network as the Sky Q box. Even though I have broadcast messages being replayed between the networks (which is working cause Apply AirPlay is working from my phone) the Sky Go app doesn't show the remote control icon.

Does the app use broadcast packets from the box or some kind of subnet scan to find the Sky Q box?

Sky Go in at home mode, talks to the Sky Q main box via a path through to the Sky Q own hidden mesh (as the Sky Q mini boxes also use to share/connect).

So you would need to be on the same wifi network.

As from when I remember when having Sky Q, that the Virtual remote control (on iPad Sky Go) only worked when within the same wifi network as the Sky Q box, for it to be available.

Re: What network protocol does the Sky Go app use for the Virtual Remote function?

Unfortunately this doesn't answer the question. I'm looking to know the networking protocol that used by this service.

This answer seems to say that the phone needs to be connected to the hidden mesh network that the Sky Q box creates but the phone can only be connected to one wifi network at a time, which is my home WiFi.

Also, I connected my phone to the same WiFi network as the Sky Q box and the icon in the app still doesn't appear.

Probably something proprietary, maybe even over udp

@kevpatts    Seeing this thread with interest, as I am considering creating a vlan to put the skyq/mini boxes on and had the same question before I jumped in and attempted it....   Did you ever get the SkyGo app working as the wife uses it on her ipad, so if it wont/cant work, then I will need to re-think doing it ?.    Thanks

No, I didn't get it working, I never got an answer to this question and I haven't had the time to do network packet traces, etc to try to diagnose the problem. The Sky Go apps works, just the virtual remote function doesn't.

@kevpatts

Ahh, right ok, missed the point that it was jsut in relation to the remote.  So if I may ask, as this will be the first time I have played with vlans in home setup, were there any challenges in getting the Sky q boxes and sky go app working ?  Also, what are you running it over ?

Thanks.
