Glass Air - common issues, & initial impressions.

Hi there,

I'm a new Sky Glass/Stream customer, and just set myself up with a multi-room deal. We started with a Stream Puck, which quickly manifested into ordering a Glass Air TV.

There are no issues with the Puck, that's plugged into our old Samsung 43" TV, moved to the bedroom, once we got the Glass TV That's great, and does what we need.

The Glass Air TV (43" model) does seem to have a couple of glitches though. The main one seems to be a common one here, where it keeps starting up in the morning saying there's no Wi-Fi connection. That's even without Wi-Fi being used, and plugged into Ethernet. It's not every morning though, and the fix is inconsistent, sometimes a simple off/on sorts it, sometimes I have to unplug/replug the cable.

I did a factory reset, which did improve it, and I turned off the Wi-Fi button. It didn't have the fault for about a week, and doesn't happen every day. We also have Plusnet, which uses the same router as BT/EE, I  see this could be a common factor.

I understand this is a known issue, so just wanted to add my voice to the noise.

We got the Air model because we're OK with the features it has, and decided I'd use the existing soundbar we have (a Samsung S60T). It's not a bad soundbar, and does OK for our needs. It's plugged into the ARC HDMI port, and got recognised immediately, and works fine mostly. Just one glitch though, is that it randomly disconnects for a few seconds, reverts to internal speakers, then reconnects again within a few seconds. It happens probably once a day, sometimes after a couple of days.

The sound is set to Auto, so wondering if setting to PCM or Pass Through is worth a try?

At the moment, I don't think these are enough to make us send this back, as the overall experience is good. Hopefully the network issue will get resolved soon. We're also out of contract with Plusnet later this year, so looking at adding broadband to our package.

Overall though, we like Sky Stream, the Whole Home setup is great, and does work seamlessly between the rooms. The package we ended up with is sensible value for money, and signing up for 2 years through offers in the Sky App made it affordable.

My constructive criticism would be that I'd like to see some way to order the Playlists listings. Mainly to show more clearly what TV shows have new episodes, perhaps listthem in that order (more Like the YouView recordings list, which puts the newest at the top). At the moment we have to open every show to see what episodes are available, they seem to appear randomly in our individual lists.

The Glass Air TV is great though, considering its price point, I can live with some minor foibles. I'd not expect top notch features. The screen is good enough, and after trying some adjustments, we've now got it left on Auto display settings, but with the Auto backlight turned off (that really doesn't work so well).

Cheers.

@Wildroverandy I've got an Air, and whilst i don't have the S60T soundbar i do have it connected to a Samsung HW-S800D, with the audio set to Auto and i'm not suffering from the disconnection issue you are seeing. To be honest it wouldn't hurt switching the audio settings and seeing if it makes a difference though.

With regards to the "auto backlight adjustment" its worth semi-regularly checking that its still switched off as I'm fairly sure some software updates turn it back on ( because its the default setting). At least my experience is that i've turned it off in the past and then noticed its switched it back on.

@MarkGoldsmith  Thank you for the reply, I'll try the audio on passthrough first and see how that goes. I have already tried a different cable.

Good tip for the auto backlight, I'll keep an eye for that

thanks again,

Re: Glass Air - common issues, & initial impressions.

Ok, so the speaker does seem like it is a software glitch, it's done a disconnect/reconnect again, set to passthrough. So I'll try setting it to PCM only, and see how that goes.

The no-Wi-Fi issue came up today, but it's been a few days being Okay. Unplugging the Ethernet cable for a few seconds fixes that for the rest of the day. I had been trying the Home button workaround, but clearly that's not really doing anything. Turning off/on does not fix it.

Now, I did a router restart after that event, and that brought up the no-Wi-Fi message straight away. So I suspect it is a simple time-out issue in the software if the router does a reboot during the night.

cheers.
