Pixelated on black screens

Hi, I've recently got sky glass tv and on the black screens it very pixelated. I also have a puck in another room which is on a normal Panasonic tv and it does not have the same issue. Are sky glass tv' s just poor quality?which is strange as sky offer UHD, but down have a TV to match. By the way my broadband on WiFi is 560mbps, which shouldn't be an issue as the black screens on the puck on the Panasonic tv is ok. Thanks

It's largely down to the type of panel and backlighting that Sky have chosen to use on Glass.

Sky Glass uses an LED backlit VA type LCD panel. Glass gen2 has local dimming, Glass Air has global dimming. Depending on the picture mode you are viewing in, the image quality can vary quite dramatically. Dark scenes with a lot of black on them can suffer, particularly on Glass Air, as the backight will show up any compression artefacts more readily.

You'll get slightly better results by watching content that is less compressed, such as from a 4K BluRay disc connected to the TV, but there's nothing you can really do about Sky's own content other than have a fiddle with the backlight and picture settings to see if you can get it to improve.

Your other Panasonic TV has perhaps got a better local dimming algorithm so doesn't show up the compression artefacts as much, or, if it's an OLED type TV then it will handle blacks a lot better.

Re: Pixelated on black screens

Ben,

Many thanks for that explanation. Unfortunately when I rang sky about it, they told me that's unusual and they don't get many people complaining about that, that's why I decided to come on here and ask people who are not paid by sky to say so. Luckily I'm still in my cool down period so can still decide to return the equipment.

Thanks again.
