I am using sky/yahoo and would like to export all emails to an an external backup drive but cannot find a falesafe solution that will allow me to do so or a third party program that supports export of sky/yahoo, why do sky make everything difficult or supply a function within the program to allow migration. Any help that can be given to a non expert would be most appreciated.

I agree with@caesarome here.
I've used Thunderbird for years on my Win 10 pc and previously on Win 7 and XP without any problems.
I use THunderbird in POP mode on my pc which allows me to store all emails in separate folders on my pc.
You can backup to an external device by using a "Copy Profile" method outlined in Thunderbird.
Useful in transferring all email data to a new pc.
I'm sure Outlook offer something similar.

Yes, you can, by backing up Outlook's .pst file
