iTunes IPv6

Hi all,

I have a new Acer Predator laptop, that connects via WIFI to a Sky SR203 router which is connected to Sky Fibre.

I've just had an issue after reinstalling iTunes whereby re-deownloading my music libary would give me the error message "network connection lost (3253)". I tried all the listed solutions but they proved fruitless. However, one comment I found mentioned IPv6. If the box is ticked in the network settings it can cause iTunes problems connecting. I've unticked that box and low and behold, iTunes is happily downloading my content.

Anybody else had this issue? It seems odd that it works fine on IPv4 but not IPv6 and indeed, will this not cause me issues further down the line as IPv6 becomes the standard?

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Julian

@J+Bee not heard of this issue before but given iTunes has been largely forgotten by Apple as they have switched to Apple Music it could just be legacy software.

Currently few sites are IP6 only but in time that will become an issue. Sky have supported IP6 since the early days  it would seem to be time to migrate your music library to a modern system?

Re: iTunes IPv6

Thank you @Chrisee for your quick response. It is a strange one, if both IPv6 and IPv4, iTunes simply errors out. Untick IPv6, it works fine.

I've tested IPv6 using www.test-ipv6.com and get the following:

Any idea what the highlighted yellow message means? Is there something I need to look at?

Many thanks (FYI, iTunes? Switch to a modern system? I can't cope with such change 😆)

Re: iTunes IPv6

@J+Bee It's simple you need and want iTunes then leave the ipV6 off in the hub if it is causing a clash with your old apple program.

If you come across something that want's needs ipV6 then turn it back on again do what is needed and off.

Turning it off on the Hub, you disable ipV6 for all your home devices, so heads up on that....

Re: iTunes IPv6

Hi @JimM1

Thank you for responding!

I'm in total agreement, I'll just switch off IPv6 for iTunes purposes and then turn it back on after but doesn't it bug you as to why it doesn't work how it really should?!?!

That aside, I realise that both yourself and @Chrisee have stated that iTunes is now old and outdated and having looked in to it further, the Apple Music app is the way forward. I'm having zero issues with that app.

Thank you for your advice, it's genuinely appreciated.

Re: iTunes IPv6

@J+Bee My daughter still uses iTunes, and my ipV6 is fully implemented, would not turn it off even if she asked or had a problem, so you may just have something else going on!

Re: iTunes IPv6

@JimM1 That's my niggle, is there something not quite right elsewhere? Clearly iTunes works for others (your daughter included) within the IPv6 environment, so what's actually causing my issue and will it manifest elsewhere itself further down the line?

Re: iTunes IPv6

@J+Bee As you said you newly installed the apple iTunes software on your laptop, and there is a few side programs that get loaded along with that, so could be anything, daughter has had it on her laptop for yonks, think that is still running windows 10, it's a dell xp15 so at least 10 years old if not older, but she is an apple person, me Android and Windows. I know she still use's it as forever updating and downloading music.

With all the updates that are thrown around now a day's what works today may not tomorrow, it's a fight them as it goes on, that's one off the reason's i am back at sky EE FW updated there hub and KILLED my network, that i was not having, so they told me to go and i did!
