Hello,
When launching Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) on PC, the internet is throttled to 2mbps - 8mbps. This only applies to the PC, other devices work fine.
I've read online that service providers are throttling when certain programs are running and MSFS is one of them.
I've carried out a lot of tests and can see the speed drop (across the whole PC) immediately upon launching the program.
Is there anyway to find out more info to resolve this.
Thanks
Anthony

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@Anthony99 Sky maintain they do not "throttle" applications and I have seen no reliable evidence thst isn't true. This question comes up quite frequently and normally the issue can be teaced to poor internal networking which where WiFi is used is highly likly or some line issue. 2 to 8Mb/s (Megabits per second) sounds incresdibly low do you mean 2 to 8MB/s (Megabytes oer seconds) by any chance? Thst would be 16 to 64Mb/s.
So forum member cannadvise run a speed test on the PC and post the result with your hub's stats see Find your Sky Broadband router statistics

Hello,
Thanks for your reply. yes I meant megabytes.
It's definetly something to do with the program. (and like I said, it only affects the PC when it's running). I've tried wired and wifi, and it's the same issue.
Doing a speed test before starting the program I get 80 MB/s, as soon as the program starts, it doesn't go above 8MB/s. Closing it, it jumps back up. It's not as if MS Flight Sim is hogging the bandwidth as it complains about low bandwidth on streaming textures.
I'm not sure what the stats show but here they are. Thanks again for your help.

What category ethernet cable are you using?
Could you log onto the router and go to the ethernet tab and make sure it is set to gigabit
You can check what setting a windows pc is set to and amend if available as below
to check what speed your card is currently set to :-
Go to the icon of the taskbar
Locate the icon Internet
Press on network and internet settings
Click on Ethernet
Click change adapter options
Double click on Ethernet. There, you get the speed, it can be 100 mbps or 1Gbps. If it is the second, we do not have to do anything, but if it is the first we have to configure the card
Then If you have a windows pc you can change the card settings as below
In the window where the speed was indicated, you have to click on properties
Check that the option Microsoft network clients is marked, if not, do it
Click on set up
We go to Advanced Options
Search Speed & Duplex
Change the value to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex
Accept

In addition when you posted the stats there was a 142Mbps download per the wan mer rx bits per second

Hello,
I'm just using wifi now, but the router is set to gigabit Ethernet anyway.
I've just done another test....
MS flight sim running - google speed test = 2.33mbps d/l, .0.19 u/l
MS flight sim not runnning - google speed test = 102.6 mbps d/l, 23.2mbps u/l.
It's not my connection, it's purely linked to this program.
This issue is also posted on the MS flight sim community -https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/ms-server-problems-and-vpns-important/587105
Any ideas welcome :-)... thanks again.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreCan you show your PCs task manager when MSFS is running?

Hello,
See the below.... let me know if you needed more info from the Task Manager,.
When running MS Flight SIM, the google speed test is 8.7Mbps (Flight sim is only using 0.1Mbps)
When it's not running, the speed test is 107Mbps

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreThat is odd. Does the same thing happen when using a VPN? I notice on the link you posted a user solved it by using a VPN.
19 Feb 2024 03:12 PM
Yes, I tried a VPN. Both Proton and Urban (free versions). Doesn't change the speed for me at all.
I've tried adjusting the Delivery Optimisation in Windows, disabling IPv6, cmd prompts... the lot, nothing resolves it for me.
I just don't understand how it affects the whole PC.
I even tried turning it off and on again 🙂
It took 4 days to download MSFS via pc xbox app/gamepass (about 130gb I think) the other week but as the game streams data for textures, it affects the actual game as it complains about low bandwidth.
Funny thing is, it works fine on the Xbox (but I have it on PC as it's got a better GPU) and can run at higher frame rates
Cheers
