Switch from Virgin to Sky

Hi, I am considering switching from Virgin to Sky, and understand that Sky uses a different infrastructure to  Virgin.

When I go through the set up on the website to purchase Sky, it is defaulting to Remote Activation. However, I only have the Virgin Connection Box in the House, and not the Openreach connection that the hub will need.

Outside I have an overhead cable coming from a telegraph pole to my house, but there are breaks in the cable as it comes down the wall. So I assume they will need to re-run a new cable and fir the relevant socket inside my home? How do I ensure that this is done before the switch over from virgin to Sky as I don't want to be waiting days for Broadband while waiting for an engineer to be scheduled in.

I looked on the Broadband Checker and the following information is shown for my home:

Our records show the following FTTP network service information for these premises:-Single Dwelling Unit Residential OH Dpole Hoist required.

FTTP is available and a new ONT may be ordered.

The exchange is not in a current fibre priority programme

As a WLR withdrawal exchange, product restrictions apply

SOADSL is not restricted at the exchange

For all ADSL and WBC Fibre to the Cabinet (VDSL or G.fast) services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage.

For all SOADSL services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage.

Actual speeds experienced by end users and quoted by CPs will be lower due to a number of factors within and external to BT's network, Communication Providers' networks and within customer premises.

In order to be eligible for handback, downstream speed should be less than Downstream Handback Threshold values.

If you decide to place an order for a WBC fibre product, an appointment may be required for an engineer to visit the end user's premises to supply the service

ADSL, ADSL2+ and SOADSL availability: If shown at FTTP or SOGEA premises,ADSL, ADSL2+ and SOADSL are not available to order due to WLR Withdrawal stop sell rules. CPs should order FTTP or SOGEA. Copper products are only available by exception.

any help would be gratefully received.

The table above those notes would be helpful

At the minute you  will need an engineer visit to run fibre to the house and install an ont

Best to actually call sky to place the order

Re: Switch from Virgin to Sky

I would suggest that you order Sky as an additional service, stressing that point when you order. That way you have the backup of the Virgin service if there are any delays from Openreach. Worst case you'll pay both for a month after Sky goes live. I've seen too many reports of Openreach running into issues or simply not turning up on the day, but the existing service being terminated anyway.

Only potential issue with that is if you have telephony from Virgin, as you'd then need to port the number across to Sky. Although that's never guaranteed anyway.

For reference, the significant information is

Single Dwelling Unit Residential OH Dpole Hoist required.

FTTP is available and a new ONT may be ordered.

As noted above, the requirement for this specific and somewhat specialist equipment does raise the distinct possibility that any promised installation date might well slip.
