Slow wi fi

When I use wi fi through my iPad or laptop I'm constantly getting the " buffering" signal, why. I never had this with Vodafone and I was with them for 2 years, plus the sky broadband is supposed to be 2 1/2 times faster

Do they buffer when you are next to your broadband hub or does this just happen in certain rooms ?
