Sky Ireland Siro - change of router

I have Sky Siro fibre and was tired of dropouts using the Sky hub, so I decided to put my own router into play. I am using the Netgear X6 r8000 connected to the ONT. Using PPPoe user: xxx@skydsl PWD: anything you want and VLAN 10, it connects first time. However the line speed dropped to 250 Mbps! Tried with a TP link VR2800 and get 500 Mbps. Not sure why the speed is low, but suspect problem at Sky side throttling due to new device. The Sky hub was unusable and believed to be related to a known bug that makes working from home unstable. Any thoughts how to raise the speed back to 1Gbps?

@Andy+Wilkinson never heard of Sky throttling a connection due to use of a third party router. Not sure on the Irish regulation but if they tried that in the UK Ofcom would be on them like a ton of bricks. I would suspect some issue with the router.

How are you measuring speeds? The only reliable way is by using a Gigabit ethernet connection when the network is not in use using a high quality speed test site, if you are using wifi I would suspect that immeadiatly. You can test internal wifi speeds with apps like Wifi Sweetspots.

Re: Sky Ireland Siro - change of router

It is not Sky throttling speed intentionally. What can happen is that if aother device is attached with a different Mac address, settings can revert to their base setting. I suspect I need to reach out to Sky tech to get the setting reset to Gb instead of 250Mb. I have measured speed 3 ways... At the router (built in), fast.com and Ookla. So with them all giving the same answer I went onto Sky's broadband checker and all works but connecting the device. That was expected, as it's not a Sky hub. All my checks are done at the router and NOT over wi-fi.

@Andy+Wilkinson

It is such a drastic reduction in speed that i doubt it is the result of mac address change.  Does the 3rd party router give the option of cloning the mac of the sky router ?

Re: Sky Ireland Siro - change of router

Yes to the cloning and yes to changing it to match the sky hub. To add that this behaviour is replicated on both the Netgear X6 R8000 and the TP Link Archer VR2800.

@Andy+Wilkinson think you will have to call Sky Ireland to take this further as the issue is very odd to say the least.

@Andy+Wilkinson @Chrisee

Andy, any chance you can give a bit more detail on how you set your 3rd party router up?

I am trying to set an asus up and am having problems with getting it to connect.

Re: Sky Ireland Siro - change of router

Of course... Connect the ONT to the internet in. I setup the WAN / internet to PPPoe and entered user: xxx@skydsl PWD: anything you want then I went into advanced settings and made sure I configured VLAN 10. This was the point I missed at first and then digging around in advanced settings I entered VLAN 10, boom connected! Let me know if you are still having issues and I will try to help.

TP-Link Archer C5400

Hi guys

I was reading this and need some help. I just got the above router and would love to use it with my SKY Siro. The supplied router isn't great.

I did the following:

1) Change to PPPoe

2) Entered username/password as

User name: xxx@skydsl

Password: anything

3) Changed VLAN 10, I think. In advanced there is a VLAN internet and empty box. I entered 10 then it requires me to fill two out VLAN settings for voice and one other.

It still doesn't work. Do I need to copy over details from the sky hub?

any help please !!!

Re: Sky Ireland Siro - change of router

Hi,

Came across this post as I was attempting to do the same and managed to get it working.  Below is the setting I updated for VLAN 10.

Re: Sky Ireland Siro - change of router

Hello Andy,

I recently bought a gaming router, TP Link Archer C5400X, Im having trouble setting it up?

Read your post and hoping you can help me?

I have tried setting up the router on the routers homepage 192.168.1.1 and also with the TP Link Tether App. But no luck unfortunately, any advice for me? I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers, Brian.

Re: Sky Ireland Siro - change of router

Hi there,

Where are these changes performed?

Changing to PPPOE for example? Thanks.

@Andy+Wilkinson no evidence Sky could throttle speeds remotely on fibre connections if they wanted to in the UK they would be in trouble with the regulator if they tried it and I suspect its the same in Ireland.

How are you measuring speeds? If over wifi that is the most likely cause. I have ,limited knowledge of the Irish service but as far as I am aware Sky just resell the EIRcom product.

Interested in knowing what bug you refer to stopping people from using the SR203 for working from home. There  are.literally millions of these units out there working without issue. Of course if using for business using wifi is never a good idea especially if trying to use a private VPN.
