Sky Broadband - restrictive in configuration
Hi all,
I want to be able to restrict the 'OTT'adverts from youtube and other services. So I employ pi-hole running on a VM in my HomeLab (Linux servers on ProxMox....). I'm also hosting a cpl of test web sites on Apache2 etc etc....
Port Forwarding on my Hub6 (SR213 v1) is fine(ish).
But the inability to set specific DNS at the router is a pain! yes i can set each device with a different DNS (my piHome) but surely it wouldn't hurt to have this config item in the admin (at the users risk)? I understand that 99% of Sky Broadband customers wouldn't change it but.....
That i can't set my Sky Stream to use alternative DNS is a pain too..... Could it 'free up' some advertising???
I love my Sky service, but just wish it wasnt as closed down..... Also, the ability to subscribe to a fixed IP Address ould be nice too (£4 a month maybe)
Comments welcome, rant over,
❤️U Sky 😚

Re: Sky Broadband - restrictive in configuration
As you have a quite a niche setup, the supplied router is probably not ideal for your situation.
Unless you specifically need Sky Talk, consider a third party router that would be better suited to your particualar needs. Unfortunatly to use Sky Talk you have to use the Sky supplied router as the service is not a traditional SIP service.
I have a Qnap file servers running which I access remotely and run various VM's on them and have never used to Sky Hub they sent me, as it would not suit my needs. A DrayTek router connects me to Sky & Virgin Media and allows me complete control over my setup.
The ISP supplied routers are designed and suitable for 99% use cases, plug and go, which is what most users want. There will be exceptions where they are just not suitable.
I remember the Internet starting!
Sky Full Fibre & Virgin Media XGS-PON, with automatic failover using DrayTek multi WAN router.
Sky Q, which will be sadly missed when they decide to kill it off!
