Router in cupboard

We have moved onto a brand new house. The router is located in a cupboard. This is sending a weak signal to our Sky Pucks.  I suspect I need a booster but just can't find a way to contact Sky other than a robot

Your router  should be  out in the open  not in a cupboard  as this will restrict  the signal  to your  devices

Unfortunately housebuilders are often technically illiterate, and think it's a really good idea to put the ONT and all that messy cabling out of sight...

@Rtspire ihas the developer installed any Ethernet cable links to another room? If they have you can potentially move the hub to a more sensible location. Adding an extender could help a bit but given they need a strong WiFi connection back to the hub you start at a disadvantage. To get an extender from Sky first add Sky WiFi Max to your sub and then ask Sky for one to be sent out. Getting past the bot takes some effort simpky do accept offers of texts etc.

Re: Router in cupboard

Assuming this is full fibre, (and you don't make that clear), there can be up to 100m of cat 5e/cat 6 ethernet cable between the ONT, (the box on the wall with lights on it), and the router.  If you can run a cable under the cupboard door, you can move the router to a better location.

@peter-marlow+1966

A lot of developers are now including 'media cupboards' in new builds. Taylor Wimpey are one.

My son has one that also contains the boiler, EV charging controls, and his washer dryer!

Always good to mix telecoms / WiFi with running water, steam, fuel, combustion, high amperage power and a really big noisy electric motor...

Re: Router in cupboard

@TimmyBGood  Come on Timmy, they are builders.  I looked a McCarthy and Stone retirement flat a few years ago, same thing.  ONT in a utility cupboard, next to the washing machine, no network sockets, just a phone extension to the living room.

Just be grateful modern houses are using this cheap and flimsy plasterboard.  At least it's reasonably transparent.
