Phone line question (potential new customer)

Hi

I'm considering jumping ship from Virgin as Sky seem to have some really good deals at the moment.

I've been with Virgin for over 20 years (I always haggle and get a decent-ish deal) but I'm preparing to leave if they insist on doubling my price when my fixed deal ends in a few weeks.

When I looked into some of the FAQ I couldn't see anything about the process of moving from Virgin to other providers.

There is a telephone line to my property but it hasn't been used in over 21 years (when I moved here) and I have no idea if it works.  I think I read that if a new line needs to be installed the engineer will do so but won't re-locate the master socket. My original BT socket (from over 21 years ago)  is by the front door where there's nowhere to put a router (no space and no power).

Is anyone able to tell me if an engineer will put a new master socket in as part of a new customer installation? Or is there a UK based customer service number I can call to talk through my concerns before I place an order?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hi @Inula

It depends what service is available to you. If your area isnt yet enabled for FTTP your old line may still be used and no engineer required. If your area is now enabled for FTTP then a new fibre based cable will need to be installed into your property. The entry point for this typically follows your old telephone socket path, however it can differ so Sky would not be able to advise you of this until the Openreach engineer has attended to review it.
