Internet Modem Router Help (3rd party)

Hi Guys

I have an issue with Sky internet. Using Sky Q, Ultra fast 1 with fibre optic line. The internet is very fast but often cuts off. Frustratingly we have to reboot things, sometimes over and again for half hour. Sky engineers keep coming out and "fixing it", but it's never fixed. Last guy was here for two hours and found nothing wrong.

So, I'm thinking of using a 3rd part router or whatever. Maybe even using a duel modem to run the internet to all devices, independent of Sky.

Any help in working out what to do would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

D

@Birkpie you do not need a modem as the ONT unit supplied by Openreach fulfills that function. You can indeed replace the Sky hub with a third party router although not every router is able to connect to a Sky full fibre service. Asus's rsnge seems the most popular.

Replacing a Sky hub with a third party router will mean you will lose your Sky Talk voice line and causes potential complications with Sky Q mini boxes as their wifi can only connect to Sky wifi either from the hub or where thst is not present the 5GHz hotspot of your main Q box. This can  interfer  with your new router's wifi. The best solution is to hard wire your Q boxes which will improve their reliability. Also you will lose the wifi hotspots the Q boxes currently provide.

Whether changing the router will improve stability depends on the cause of your problem. If the issue is with the line which is unlikely on full fibre changing the router wont help. If the issue is with Wifi strength then there are other solutions which msybe simpler. Switching the wifi off on the hub and using a whole home wifi system in access point mode maybe simpler and just as effective although the issue with Q boxes still remains.

Re: Internet Modem Router Help (3rd party)

Thanks for this Chrisee.

I'm not as concerned with the Sky boxes. Problem I have is the internet goes off, so no computers etc. I work from home which is frustrating. I also have an home bar entertainment area and the internet has sometimes gone off while the family are mid karaoki. All the TV's are internet ready but once Sky goes off we cannot stream.

In an ideal world I would like to run everything except the Sky boxes on a total different internet or router. I plugged mesh unit Deco M5 into the ONT, with the intention of trying a splitter, but that didnt work. I suppose it needed another router, if it was to work.
