Intermittent broadband failure

Intermittent broadband outage, every couple of weeks, more recently on June 8th at 06.50 and 09.00. Today 10th June at 10.00 and 11.50, not centred on house equipment, but must be local transmitter outage. Becoming a bigger issue, if you cannot fix this, I need another supplier so request release from my contract. Thanks

This is a community where customers help each other so you are not talking to Sky. If there is an issue then moving to another supplier who also uses the openreach network might not see the issue fixed.

The first thing to check is this link to see if there are any outages in your area, it can be a bit slow at picking up issues so if nothing shows perhaps try it again later:
https://www.sky.com/servicechecker

If nothing shows then try this line test:
https://www.sky.com/help/articles/broadband-diagnostic-start

You can also run the test via the MySky app on a mobile data connection.

After this has finished and if it reports back all is good click on broadband to run an updated test. If you get amber or red please follow the on screen instructions.

Unsolvable intermittent Broadband dropoouts

I joined Sky Broadband last august, from December 2025, I have experienced intermittent dropouts of Broadband at unpredictable times of the day and night, ranging from 5minutes to 3.5 hours. currently up to twice a day. Sky seem completely unable to find anything wrong with the system despite countless contacts with them. But I have found out myself exactly what the problem is. and I hve screen shots to prove it. In the background of my Sky Box I found this log. "syslog DHCP lease expired from Server connection DOWN" This was at 10.15 am today but at 11.15 on my watch. so the log isn't running at BST.  So it turns out that your IP changes regularly to another one for various reasons, this is because the System is set to a Short Term Lease. used in public slpaces such as cafes etc. It should be set to the Long Term Lease for businesses and private homes. There are only so many IPs apparently available so the system runs out of time to connect and drops the broadband only to have to start the system of reconnection. This is the reason my Broadband drops and is getting worse. So , Sky, what are you going to do about it?

@Anthony_Pogrund Sky have always used an hourly lease renewal so I doubt that is the cause of your issue. It is used to check that the connection is still live. Sky have over 5 million broadband customers using this approach

I don't know what is causing your but it is very unlikely to be the routine IP lease renewal

Sky Broadband supplies over five million properties using similar lease-time settings, so it seems likely that something else is going on in your particular case.

So , Sky, what are you going to do about it?

You aren't addressing Sky by posting here.  Unfortunately creating more IPv4 addresses isn't an option due to their 32-bit format: the Max Hub enables them to be shared upstream using MAP-T but earlier models don't support this.

Re: Unsolvable intermittent Broadband dropoouts

i believe it is too much of a coincidence that the outage happened with the syslog showing such a message albeit not on bst timing but thanks

Re: Unsolvable intermittent Broadband dropoouts

the question then needs to asked why the situation is getting worse and why Sky are unable or unwilling to take this situation seriously unless it it a total long term outage. is the exchange server in Hornsea East yorks overloaded. ? but thanks anyway

You may well be correct that it's a factor, but any router should be able to cope with WAN IP address renewal without dropping the broadband connection otherwise a whole lot more people would be complaining.

Globally the solution is an ongoing transition to IPv6, which would permit every grain of sand on the planet to have a unique address (actually about a million unique addresses each, which frankly seems a little excessive ; )

IPv4 address exhaustion has been widely discussed since at least the 1980s.
