House rewiring - will this work?
Hi all,
We are about to have our house rewired, and part of the work will include a load of data cabling. I am not very techy, so have a couple of quick questions about setup please!!
It is a lovely old house - currently we have gigafast through the sky max hub, plus 3x additional pods. The pods are not in the most ideal locations but we are obviously forced to use our existing powerpoints.
Here is my masterplan after the rewire:
- Sky Max Hub ethernet into a TL-SG1016D 16 port gigabit unmanaged switch
- As many devices as possible hard-wired back to the switch (sky glass, PS5 etc)
- 3x TP-Link Deco X55 AX3000 hard-wired back to the switch and positioned around the house as access points to boost wifi signal
- All hard-wired cabling to be cat6.
Will this work? Any advice on the kit / options I have chosen? Or is there a better way to achieve this?
Like I say - I am not overly techy - just been googling and reading and have this setup in mind. Any advice would be really welcome!
Thanks.

As a fundamental rule, make sure the contractor actually understands ethernet topology: many electricians don't.
Ethernet cable laid in rings or in short segments between sockets is worse than useless.

Hi Timmy,
Thanks for the reply. Please can you explain what you mean by "laid in rings"?
My understanding is that each of the new data points around the house will be individual cat6 data cables back to the switch location. Sorry if I haven't understood your point but I'm learning fast!

Yes, that's how it should be done, but my point is that this is completely different to electrical mains topology, and I've personally encountered locations where the electrical contractor (or possibly their apprentice) who put in the network cabling alongside the mains cable has entirely failed to understand the distinction.
