Gigafast + Netgear Switch + Slow WiFi
‎01 Mar 2025 05:08 PM
Hi
OpenReach recently installed FTTP in the area so have moved from a basic 35Mbps to Gigafast with one of the old vertical black Sky routers.
When plugged into the router directly with a cat5 or cat7 ethernet cable I get 895Mbps. Plugging same cables from the router to a Netgear 10/100/1000 Mbps switch, then into the laptop the speed drops to around 150Mbps. Why should the speed drop when going through the switch?
2.4Ghz WiFi is terrible, it varys between 30 to 70 Mbps. 5Ghz WiFi is better, it's around 200Mbps. All tests are done with the device and router in the same room. Have tested using Windows laptop and 3 different Android mobile devices. I'm not expecting to get 900Mbps on WiFi but I was hoping I'd be getting at least 500Mbps.
I've read the black router doesn't support WiFi 6 and the new Sky Max Router does - I have an outstanding case with Sky about this as on their website it clearly stated "This package comes with our latest Sky Max Hub" (Sky have since changed the wording on the website, but I have a screenshot from the time of my order and it was also confirmed on the phone that I would receive the Sky Max router at the time of order) and Sky are saying I need to pay an additional subscription for the Max router.
Is it limitations of the old black router causing the slow WiFi speeds or would it be anything else?
Thanks a lot
Steve
