External VOIP Connection required.

I have a Sky Q 203 router which I dont use, I dont want to use as its useless, limited connections, poor managability etc etc.

I currently use an Edgerouter Max as the connection onto the fibre which works great has all the stats and details I need and performs great. The only thing thats missing is the VOIP socket.

2 Possible solutions to getting VOIP (landline) working.

1 - Put the sky router into modem only mode (well actually not a true modem more of a pass through as FTTP is (AFAIK) an ethernet link)

2 - Obtain a device thats sits inbetween the edge router and the FTTP connection that picks up the voip part only.

1 - I think has been shot down many times by Sky, god knows why.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I think we've just pointed out that there is no modem-only mode: that's hardly unusual for an ISP router other than Virgin hubs, which by definition are actually cable modems ; )

No-one has yet posted any solution for option 2, as it would presumably require extracting and then duplicating whatever the Sky Broadband Hub is doing for Sky Talk VOIP authentication.

You can usually get VoIP solution that work on the LAN side.

Zen internet on FTTP (900Mbps down, 100Mbps up). Re: External VOIP Connection required.

Thats good to know, would it 'map' to my existing landline number, when I tested the sky router with the landline phone it had the same number as it was prior to FTTP.

Suitable devices?

I think @mae-3 is referring to 'real' VOIP from another provider rather than Sky Talk over VOIP, which is what you appear to be attempting to enable using a non-Sky router: as I said, no-one has yet posted any solution to that.  While there may well be suitable hardware available, the appropriate Talk configuration is unknown as Sky has never published it (being an unsupported option).

Re: External VOIP Connection required.

I am in the same shoe. I have a Cisco RV345-router in between the FTTP panel as I need VPN links to my Azure/AWS labs (I generally distrust ISP devices and as using a Billlion BiPAC 7800DXL prior to the RV).

The Mrs recently purchased a fancy telephone and now I am tasked with making it work.

As far as I can tell, the only solution is to signup for a VOIP provider (I suspect a propriety device will be included). If anyone nows how to breakout the Sky VOIP traffic (possibly a specific VLAN configuration to), that would be a step in the right direction.

No such information has ever been posted here: personally my suspicion is it's an authentication which is required.

@ojamira if anyone had that information, which I doubt, it would be unlikely to be posted here as Sky have strong views on reverse engineering their systems . Currently no Sky hub no Sky Talk service unfortunately.

Did you manage to get a resolution to this? I'm in a similar boat, I'm using a Draytek 2862  and have the internet working a treat. Only issue is the VOIP connection, as the WAN connection is going into the Draytek and not the Sky Hub. Has anyone tried an adapter? Or is this not likley to work as the VOIP traffic is hardware specific to the Sky Hub ?

That's a simple passive wiring adapter which is intended to permit digital phone handsets to use structured cabling (ethernet) in a business environment to reach an onsite PBX.  It can't do anything at home with VOIP.

The relevant device would be a VOIP ATA, but unfortunately Sky don't publish the required configuration details.
