When I was sent the plan for installing the broadband it looked like they were going to unnecessarily dig through my garden when they can drill a hole through the wall at the side instead. Can I let them know on the day that they can do that instead or will I need to get in contact with the customer service team to make any changes to the planned work?

Your check has confirmed that Openreach plan to bury the cable, its very likely there is no other way to bring the cable to you. Note that they will still drill a hole in your wall to bring the cable in once it reaches your property wall.

That would be an odd install method for the final stage. Are you sure they dont need to dig through your garden to actually lay the fibre? Where is the cable currently? What makes you think it can just go straight through your wall?

Re: Engineer might do unnecessary work outside our flat
Honestly I don't know but I am trying to figure out if it could be avoided. They most likely can only go through the garden like you mentioned but as I'm renting the property I was wondering if there would've been any way to avoid it. Am I best to wait until the engineer is here and then talk to them about it?

Customer support for an ISP has absolutely no influence on how Openreach (or their equivalent in ROI) actually carries out an installation.

Re: Engineer might do unnecessary work outside our flat
partial direct in ground suggests a narrower and shallower dig than for 4xample that would be done on a drive way
