Does Sky Have a 6db SNR Standard Now?

Hi

Just recently come back to Sky after moving house (and an absolute nightmare with VM, but I digress).

My line is obviously in it's training period, which is fine, I've been here before.

Previously though, the line training used to reset itself most nights, and drop the SNR a tad to get a faster speed, and see if it was stable.  Repeat until optimal speed/stability reached.

It's day 10 now, and my line hasn't moved from 6db SNR, it's reset three times that I've noticed, once it made absolutely no change, the 2nd time it actually increased the SNR and the speed dropped, then it reset back to 6db which gives me about 31mb/s.

Is it going to stay like this?  I was previously on a 3db SNR which gave me a far better speed (albeit, on a different line, but it hasn't even tried on this one).

Update -  just noticed it's reset a couple of hours back, to a slower speed/higher SNR.

Is this simply a case of an unstable or poor line?

Thanks.

Re: Does Sky Have a 6db SNR Standard Now?

I wondered that, but there looks like an exchange at the end of my road, about 0.5 miles.

The exchange location has very little to do with the length of your VDSL line.

What does this say if you put in your address :

@DMViolatorIf you know the name of the exchange that is not that far away. You can check if you are connected to it or another filling out the form in the link below.

It will tell you the speeds you should be getting around, if you are not sure of what you are looking at post a screenshot, but hide the information in the top-left hand corner.

Sorry, I was under the impression it mattered.  Fair enough.

Don't know what you want to see in the link you sent, this is the main bit.

@DMViolator  From your router stats that you posted in your initial post showing 24.2 mb/s on the look up of your address it shows a minimum handback of 27.4 with a max of  48.1 on a clean line. Would seem that you are lower than you should be.

When you run the broadband test are you able to complete this and if so can you click on " Tell me more about my connection ". This will tell you the speed that you are supposed to get between and your minimum. Could you type those or type them out as it looks like you are below the speed you are supposed to get.

Upstream looks right though so he's not going to get a 3dB margin applied to a line like that, simply too long and given the length of the cable bundle probably has a number of disturbers inducing cross-talk at the very least.

@DMViolatorKeep an eye on your speed, but if you have not had anything like this around you then that is just a stock message.

@DMViolator not every cabinet supports the lowering of the noise margin to 3dB from the standard 6dB.  Cabinets msde by Huawei do but ECM cabinets don't. Which type you are connected to is down to luck but your line is not behaving properly even if stuck on 6dB.

Sky will want you to wait until the "training" prriod is over before they can put in a fault report to Openreach.

Re: Does Sky Have a 6db SNR Standard Now?

Yeah I get that, maybe I'm just used to being on better lines/cabinets.

What is the training period these days? Still 10?

@DMViolator

Yes, 10 days.

Passing on the tips I have learned in over 24 years as a more than satisfied Sky customer.

Re: Does Sky Have a 6db SNR Standard Now?

@Chrisee

ECI cabinets will do 3dB margin with no problem at all.

What you're thinking about is g.INP where ECI cabinets (depending on h/w & f/w revs) have various issues. BT Wholesale/Openreach have run various trials over the years with g.INP on ECI cabinets with results ranging from disastrous to perfectly acceptable.

When we sold our last house in 2020 the (Sky) line was set at 3dB with g.INP applied and had been that way for 20 months. The cabinet was an ECI rack dating from 2012 or so.

I've no idea what the current state of play is with ECI cabinets & g.INP thankfully. All I'd say is "buy cheap, get junk" and that's exactly what BT Group did when they purchased ECI kit 🙂
