Copper wire broadband switch off
I received a call from Sky advising copper wire broadband would no longer be available in our rural area from Jan 2027 and I would need to switch to fibre. The Sky contact then checked if this was available and I was told it wasn't and there were no plans by Openreach to provide Fibre in the future and only option would be to use Sky's satellite service which would cost me £50/month instead of the £35/month I pay at the moment for a mediocre service. This is on top of the charges for our Sky tv package. She couldn't tell me if my sky glass tv would work if I changed provider since my agreement for it was complete and paid for or if I swapped provider whether it would work or as a standalone using Netflix apps etc if I cancelled my Sky TV package. Is anyone else in the same position and can offer advice or an alternative?

Re: Copper wire broadband switch off
@Skyuser81 first point your Glass TV will work with most any broadband connection including mobile and services like Starlink. There is no need to switch to satellite services like Sky Q which sre pretty poinntless without a broadband connection as well and is itself likely to be shut down in a few years. Mobile brosdband is viable if you have a decent mobilecsignal Starlink is pricy but pretty much can be used anywhhere.
These contacts are causing confusion as while it is true that the old PSTN copper voice netwirk is being turned off in January 2027 that only directly affects voice services not broadband. The delivery of broadband over copper is not directly affected outsiide a few areas and that is not due to be turned off for quite a few years..
What was expected to happen was customers would be switched to a service Openreach call SOGEA where both voice and data will be delivered over copper cables as they are now but the connection from the fibre cabinet would go via a different exchange. If you have a monment wiould you be so kind to run your full address through this checker Openreach Checker.?
You will see a table and some notes if you can post a screenshot after obscuring the reference to your address. Can you also give the name of your local exchange? That should enable myself or one of my superuser colleagues understand whst is going on whether you one of what was assumed to be very few who are affected or Sky have messed up.
