Broadband keeps dropping

Internet runs at a constant 4.5 MB/s on downloads, then periodically after about 15-20 seconds it will drop all the way down to less than 100 kb/s for about 5-10 seconds. This has made doing a lot of things impossible to do and it only gets worse the more that it wants to download.

I've tried restarting the hub. It hasn't worked.

I am using a -wired- connection via powerline adapter.

I have checked the cables.

Other members of my familiy are also complaining about the drops, each using Wi-Fi.

 Anyone know how to help?

When transferring data over wireless or ethernet over a powerline you can get those symptoms because of poor wireless or poor electrical wiring on the premises, especially over multiple electrical circuits in relation to an ethernet over powerline.  One will need to simplify the system by removing the homeplugs to see if that improves the situation with relocating the wired device as necessary for testing purposes.

Re: Broadband keeps dropping

For some more context, my powerline adapter doesn't have a Wi-Fi 'boost' function, merely serving to extend the cabling. Though other family members have complained about drops to. (One being wi-fi to a laptop, the other being to table and Sky TV)

This might help for anyone looking, to understand what I mean. It runs 'normally' then dips.

Where is your router kept. I had same issue but when I moved it (had been keeping in cupboard) speed increased

How many other 'family memebers' are there? You have a rather mediocre FTTC connection speed which is only really ideal for 2 people sharing at the same time. If you are downloading at full speed on steam and you have 3-4 other people trying to use it as well you are likely to see these symptoms. This is why people pay good money for 3rd party routers with good QoS to handle busy households on lower connection speeds.

Re: Broadband keeps dropping

Typically there are 2-3 other users at a time, though for the most part just 1.

I did however manage to 'fix' the issue, and by that I mean after attaching the cable from the hub to the pc directly, and it worked fine. It continued afterwards as well, plugging it back into the powerline adapters and it worked as normal.

Unsure what the actual problem ended up being.

@Hokan117

Perhaps a loose ethernet cable connection
