Broadband Speed Test authentication

I have gigafast fibre installed yet still having issues with streaming services.
When I use an online internet speed test, the Mbps are always much much lower than the claimed 900Mbps I should have. Yet Sky's website always says the service is good and signal strength is what it should be.
is there any way to authenticate any of this?how do I know they're not just feeding me **bleep**?
Sky are infuriating.

@Dubba Here is the information you need linked below so have a read!

And for speed related issues good read.

Best advice i can give you don't expect 900Mb/s so get that out off your head, that is not the way server's work...

Re: Broadband Speed Test authentication

Thanks for the response....

Ok, I'm a realist and I should've stated that I don't expect to be getting a full 900Mbps, there's always going to be a little shaved off, which I can appreciate, but considering some of the tests results are between 40 and 200Mbps I think it's still quite a heavy drop even if I'm running tests via WiFi, not hard wired up to the (latest) router.
N.B. I live alone and I don't have loads and loads of devices pulling on the WiFi

Re: Broadband Speed Test authentication

@Dubba I have sky FF500 and the lowest sustained speed so far that I have seen is 200Mb/s when the network external got REAL busy and OR/Sky could not sustain the feed to the connection!

But by far in large the return is normally the 500/70Mb/s wireless or wired, wired being the far superior connection every time.

One Samsung A54 phone that would drop to 17/70Mbs stay there until i turned the wifi off on the mobile, but that was traced to weak wireless wifi signal so fixed that by adding another AP to the system!

When you say the latest router, are you on a CF CityFibre connection with the wifi7 sky Gigafast+ in use?

Re: Broadband Speed Test authentication

@Dubba And a heads up from the OR published info, not saying that is what is going on with you though!

1. FTTP is a contended service, up to 32 users can be sharing the 2.5Gb backhaul, so you can never expect the full speed all the time, you may get 900mb when there are fewer people using it. I expect that you are sharing the backhaul with many users. If everyone was using it fully, you may only get 78mbs. Its called statistical multiplexing, which relies on the fact that all users are not utilising their connection fully, all of the time.

BT quote up to 900mb, so you are likely to get much less than that during peak times.

Speed tests pass very little data, so normally give a much higher speed.

2. The max OR connect to a splitter is 30 ( 32 is the splitter maximum but policy is 30 ) not every CBT port provided is likely to have a customer using it , so unless on a ‘new site’ that has no alternatives to OR FTTP the actual number on a splitter is likely to be way less , OR currently have about a 30% take up, so maybe 10 users per splitter , plus the majority don’t take 900Mb but slower profiles , and the chances of those ‘on line ‘ at any one time all and doing something intensive, rather than browsing / Netflix that may be consuming less than 30-100Mb , is slim , that’s why there is a 700Mb minimum speed guarantee on 900Mb …..the 2.4Gb will be plenty ,you would have to be incredibly unlucky to have any consistent congestion.

If you suspect PON congestion, try at a time when there won’t be much activity, late evening or early morning .

Although you have tried somethings to ‘ isolate’ the problem , the most obvious thing to do ( that you haven’t apparently tried ) is use the BT router , without doing that , you haven’t really proved anything , your third party router may great , but even great routers can be mis configured or faulty

Unfortunately WiFi is not a stable or predictable medium, and the current (latest) Sky Hub models appear to significantly underperform on wireless in some properties.  The only way to carry out an actual test of broadband speed is using a device with a gigabit ethernet chipset over Cat5e or better ethernet cable.

Yes I'm on a cityfibre connection with the Sky Max Hub.

I understand

Re: Broadband Speed Test authentication

@Dubba There is not much experience on the Forum regarding the CF Fibre and how it operates or how well it does it all and if symmetrical up/down or if you are Pon or Gpon connected. You are kind off in the twilight zone with it all, only suggestion i can make is do an Ethernet Test with a capable device and test at a few fixed times to give you a base to work off over a couple off weeks, and do try to do so with a GOOD test program, speedtest.net is good, will allow you to pick a server and keep using it as the guide, records the results and at least it does push resonable amount off data for the testing!
