Broad Band Speed - Cabra Dublin

For many years I have received a good service from Sky but since the beginning of 2026 the broadband speed can drop to between 2-20 mbps. At other times it increases to 100 mbps. The contract is for 500 mbps. I appreciate this will speed will never be achieved but 2-20 mbps is not acceptable. I occasionally have agents at my front door promising great things from Sky. I reasonable broadband speed would be a helpful start. My contract finishes with Sky at the end of 2026 and I will not be renewing with Sky unless I experience a marked increase in service. On top of that Eircom recently offered me a lower monthly charge but I accepted the recent increase with Sky out of loyalty. How stupid was I.  The pay more get less principle. To add insult to injury there is no way to contact Sky to ask for an examination of the connection. I have carried out all physical steps within the property that are recommended yet there is no change.

'Broadband', or WiFi?

The contract is for 500 mbps.

That's speed delivered over optical fibre and ethernet cable as far as the Hub, not WiFi from it.

Re: Broad Band Speed - Cabra Dublin

I'm not going to worry about it.  I'm not aware of any way for me to confirm whether I am receiving anything close to 500 mbps to the Sky router from the hub. When I complete all of the tests; make all of the adjustments; place a laptop on top of the router; etc etc I can experience speeds as low as 2 mbps. I have never experienced such a low download speed from any previous provider and never before from Sky until recently. I am one of a few in my apartment complex with Sky. I am told many are with Eir. I may just have to concede and opt for Eir at year end and save a few Euro into the bargain. Time will tell.  In the meantime I'll continue with my quest to achieve an acceptable download speed which I would think should be at least 2/5 ths of the contract speed of 500 mbps. Maybe I am being too optimistic.  I will remain thankfull, at least, to have a reliable service even if download speeds are not great.

Using a device with a gigabit ethernet port and Cat5e or higher grade ethernet cable is the only way to do so independently: the My Sky app also reports what Sky believes to be speed at the Hub.

Speed arriving at the Hub should be at least 400Mbs, but all WiFi is zero Mbs on the other side of a few walls and significantly impacted by the local environment (including what the neighbours are doing).  The 'Enhanced Wall to Wall WiFi Guarantee' for Sky Broadband subscribers with the WiFi Max supplement on their account is for a distinctly unambitious 25Mbs.

In properties where WiFi from a Sky Hub is problematic (and particularly where there's one of the faster FTTP products arriving at the address) it's worth considering the purchase of third party mesh hardware which is always likely to be better than ISP-grade kit.

Thanks. I'll work on your suggestions and hopefully a positive outcome will result by year end.
