500 Mbs down to Hub - Only getting 250 Mbs on Wifi
Hi All,
Sky Ultrafast broadband and getting 500 down to the hub but only a max of 230 over Wifi.
I've checked drivers, come off the VPN, get the same result on my laptop and PC.
Is there anything settings on the router I can check?
When I check the connection I can see it's using 5 Ghz but protocol Wifi 5?
Cheers

That would be correct if your laptop hardware doesn't support WiFi 6.

Only the white Max Hub (released in 2023) is WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and does WPA3.
Presumably yours is a Sky Broadband Hub from 2019: that's WiFi 5 (802.11ac) and WPA2-PSK

Re: 500 Mbs down to Hub - Only getting 250 Mbs on Wifi
So ideally I need to upgrade my router to take full advantage of the speeds down to the hub (ie WiFi 6) ?

That would at least put both source and client on the same hardware level. Whether it's necessary is debatable: does anything you do on the laptop actually need more bandwidth?

Re: 500 Mbs down to Hub - Only getting 250 Mbs on Wifi
I suppose it would be nice to get the speed im paying for.
May look into getting another router then

You're paying for speed to the Hub, not beyond it. Realistically only huge games updates actually benefit from anything more than about 30Mbs (which is what's required for UHD streaming)

Sky would happily offer you their Max Hub for an additional monthly subscription.

So what's preventing from getting similar speeds on WiFi using WiFi 6? It's not a distance/signal issue as I've tested right next to it.

Re: 500 Mbs down to Hub - Only getting 250 Mbs on Wifi
There's reams of discussion online about theoretical Vs real world wireless speed if you really want to get into it: personally I don't bother as long as the service being delivered over WiFi works.
If you want guaranteed maximum speed without multiple (and fluctuating) external variables, ethernet cable is the way to go.

Re: 500 Mbs down to Hub - Only getting 250 Mbs on Wifi
I'd add that my 500Mbs BT FTTP typically 'tests' as about 200Mbs on my phone, 300Mbs on a WiFi 6 laptop (but the router is WiFi 5) and 500Mbs+ on ethernet. We're an isolated house though with very little local wireless interference.

Re: 500 Mbs down to Hub - Only getting 250 Mbs on Wifi
I measured speed to my black router by hardwire Ethernet cable into back of router and then direct to laptop. Should be getting minimum of 600mb to router but only getting 493 maximum seems around 440mb after trying several measurements. Anyone any ideas please
