recording sometimes stops short before end of programme why does this happen?

Instead of maybe a  film of 180 min+ recording time it will stop short recording only 59 mins or so ,but only sometimes, not always ,why is this

Some movies have a short programme in them that breaks the movie into two parts, you need to use the series link feature on the first part to make sure both parts of the movie are recorded
