Why is Skys version of Peacock so small

Hi there was looking forward to Peacock launching on Sky. Unfortunately it seems a very baked down verison of Peacock USA.

I have noticed that Peacock USA as hundreds of movies, over a hundred just in action. A lot of these are what Sky have in Sky cinema. Quite sure that the original Peacock trailer on Sky said all content available January. This and Paramount plus is one of the reasons we have brought Sky Glass.

If this is all Peacock on Sky as to offer its very lacklustre. Obviously I can easily watch Peacock USA on the PC or laptop or a mini PC connected to the main TV but thats beside the point.

Sky say Peacock is an app but just imagine you logged into Disney or Netflix and there was just a few films and programs there.

From what peacock as to offer with so many movies and TV shows for free this must be one of the reasons Sky as a very dull caffeine free version of Peacock.

Well just my few cents worth...

Looks like you may have typed it as two separate words, the latter of which provoked the bad language filter.....

Re: Why is Skys version of Pea **bleep** so small

It's a very simple answer. It's a contract between Sky and NBC. Some other broadcasters may have the rights for other shows and/or Sky wants to keep shows for their Sky channels.

For example: the show "Botched" is not on Peacock as it's on E! instead. Downtown Abbey is not on Peacock as it aired on ITV.

So NBC can't create a contract with Sky and put (e.g.) Downtown Abbey on Peacock. ITV have paid NBC for the rights, and ITV could take NBC to court if they tried putting it on Peacock.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. Could have sworn though in the original promo trailer for Peacock it said full catalogue available January.

Does not matter I can watch through an old Mac mini attached to the Sky Glass anyway.

Hopefully a few more movies gets added to the Sky version. They have some naff horror films which I enjoy for unknown reasons.

Thanks...

Not sure why you mentioned Downton Abbey as that is actually on Peacock UK.

There is shows like Bates Motel that are currently on both Peacock UK and BBC iPlayer and you have content shared with Sky like The Equalizer.

Surprised none of Chicago shows , Law and Order/SVU/CI/OC are on it or even stuff like Knight Rider, The Rockford Files , Murder She Wrote and Columbo.

With Peacock, I realise why disney didn't call "Star on disney plus" in the UK "hulu on disney plus " (that and last time I lookef disney own only 67% of hulu) and went for Star.

I think the target for peacock as if is, is to target customers that might be getting sky content via another source like virgin media so by making peacock exclusive to sky, it might be a pull to people not subscribing directly to sky (like sky atlantic).

There is some exclusive content, final season of will & grace, girls5eva,

Re: Why is Skys version of Pea **bleep** so small

Peacock in the European territories is intended to serve as a different product and with a different strategy to the version in the US.

In the US it's intended to serve as NBCUniversal's streaming flagship hence it pulls in content from across their portfolio, so news, sports, Pay 1 movies from 2022, next day content from NBC and the cable portfolio as well as their catalogue alongside 3rd party tv & movies and WWE Network so a deep and varied catalogue makes perfect sense for the US product.

In regards to Europe, Comcast have Sky which is a successful pay tv and OTT product in it's territories and already covers sports, entertainment, news, movies, local broadcasters as well as acquisitions and 3rd party content - makes little sense to create an entirely new platform that could also weaken/devalue the established platforms & brand which still has room for growth (hence why they're using the Sky brand to expand with SkyShowtime and Sky Studios) so they're opting to bolster the existing Sky products by adding Peacock as a hub/content destination primarily dedicated to NBCUniversal catalogue and the original content as it's main draw.

In the November press release they did state it was a soft launch and the catalogue would ramp up over a few months so I assume they're still in that 'ramp-up stage' given they have yet to launch in Italy... I think no matter how deep the catalogue does get, it does seem that it's going to be a smaller proposition by design and more geared towards increasing value & growth of the existing Sky products.

One reason I think for Peacock is to entice users to move to Sky Q from other services such as Virgin Media. I think Paramount+ will also be an enticement to move as Paramount+ won't be free other then on Sky with Sky Cinema.

I don't think Paramount+ as a enticement to move from Virgin to Sky

Paramount+ standalone on Amazon Prime video channels , Smart TV's etc will be likely be cheaper than basic Netflix price.

You don't know this. You also don't know the cost. Besides, it will be a good deal to have Sky Cinema and Paramolunt+ for the same cost as just Sky Cinema.

I do hope there is an LG TV app and that Paramount+ will be showing the forthcoming Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Special Edition) in UHD/Dolby Vision.

Outside the US it has been deliberately priced cheaper than basic Netflix price in each market.

This doesn't appear to much better, it's largely True Crime and Reality content that's getting added , in fact TV shows have been removed.

I was trying to provide a very simplistic answer and use examples. When I first made the comment Downtown Abbey was not on Peacock. Still, my original point stands: it's down to copyright restrictions.
