Sky came to install my broadband, landline and TV box but failed to connect wires to my telephone ex

When I moved into my brand new flat there was a BT box in my hall cupboard. I opted for sky broadband, sky talk and sky TV. For some reason they did not connect the wires in my BT box to make my extensions live. As a result I can only use a telephone connected direct to the BT cupboard. This is not an ideal place to house my telephone particularly when I have two extension sockets in my flat. Neither BT or sky want to help me resolve this. Am I expected to employ my own telephone engineer?

@All+Saints+12  No ISP is required to connect any extensions, they connect to the master socket only.  If you want extensions to be connected and are unable to do this yourself any competant handyman can do iy.

Like you I'm a customer here, Sky Employees are clearly identified as such.

Yes. Extension cabling, like everything telecoms-related past the master socket*, is the responsibility of the householder.

@Cwright123Your phone is connected to the back of the router now, is that what you are saying?

Cordless so I get what your saying "that I don't need to sit in cupboard to make or take phone calls" but just a nuisance!😂

@Cwright123Yeah it is, but with all of the old copper lines being taken out, This is the small price we have to pay. With more people moving to using their mobile phones also, the need for a landline is dying.

Re: Sky came to install my broadband, landline and TV box but failed to connect wires to my telephon

Just had my broadband upgraded to fibre and the old landline was disconnected, meaning all my extensions were lost too.

They said that they told me that when I ordered, I don't remember this and am sure that I would have noticed if they had, but, hey hum, it's done now and I am where I am.

So, what's to do?

I did what they said and plugged a phone directly into the back of the router/hub and that phone worked just fine straight away, but its location was rubbish!

Thinking about it today, I wondered whether I could patch the old master socket through to the hub?  After a bit of trial and error, I got it sorted 🙂

What you need is a cable with a phone jack on end and an RJ11 connector on the other (the kind that often connects a telephone base station to a phone socket.  You also need an RJ11 to BT Telephone male plug (BS6312 431A) adaptor.  Connect the RJ11 end to the BT telephone adaptor.  Plug one end into your master socket and the other to the back of the hub and, if you're lucky, your old sockets will come back to life!

This wouldn't be supported by Sky in the event of any subsequent phone problems.  Personally I wouldn't do this without first being sure that the Openreach line to your master socket has been physically disconnected externally.

A better solution would be a cordless phone setup with as many handsets as convenient.
