@Rhonny do you work for Sky, sure sounds like it

Re: Sky HDR

@Anonymous  I suggest you try it on a decent £1000+set and properly encoded material. HDR is about natural colours with a much wider palette. If you think it's just extra brightness that's, bluntly, a load of rubbish

In what respect? I'm simply a veteran of Sky HDR treads and know they go on for dozens of pages, but achieve less than nothing because HDR sure ain't coming to Sky in the near future. But as I said, I don't want to be responsible for furthering this so I will bid you good day.

He he he, I sure do love getting paid by Sky for these posts. Oops, did I say that out loud?

Sadly a lot of the so-called HDR content is 'fake' HDR - The Mandalorian, for example.

Although at least most of the Star Wars movies are genuine HDR ( episodes 1-3 aren't, but personally, I try to forget about those ones!). Oddly, only one is in Dolby Vision (The Last Jedi)..

@A1exG

Very interesting, that would be a lovely surprise.

Seeing is believing. Probably how it will happen though when we're all weary of waiting after how long and least expecting ..

Re: Sky HDR

Interestingly the article says :-

"Meanwhile some of our sources have indicated that next week’s planned launch of the new 4K (UHD) Sky Nature channel on Wednesday 27th May may include a surprise, the long awaited addition of support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) content"

So it maybe that it is only available on the new Sky Nature channel at first to sort out any teething problems.

I myself love Sky movies where a lot of the new films are UHD HDR, and HDR does make a lot of difference, as can be seen via the Netflix app on all new higher end TV's, so it will be a great pleasure to watch movies in UHD HDR, and I also love F1, I bet that will look fantastic, as it's already excellent in UHD.

Re: Sky HDR

Very interesting indeed - just put the 27th in Cozi lest I forget 🙂  During lock-down we have been watching Bosch on Amazon.  An absolutely superb watching experience in every way - UHD HDR and breathtaking sound - this will be the reference - let's see if indeed Sky can deliver.  FWIW, I am viewing on a 2016 Samsung 65KS9500 TV using a Roku Streaming Stick Plus and sometimes an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K.  I would never sell this TV.

@Oyodi  That would seem to be the approach. Makes a lot of sense really - start with a relatively small amount of content in a specialist area to help iron out any issues in the content distribution system and account entitlements (where Sky's system tells the Q box you have the necessary subscription to view UHD HDR, etc ).

Had they started by showing the latest Star Wars movie in HDR, for example, then there's the potential to cause a huge surge in support, which is the last thing they need at the moment!

I think we'll see a gradual increase in both quantity and range of content over time, the speed of which will probably depend on the level of issues reported (if any) with this first batch of content. Who knows - it might even lead to some of the apps having HDR enabled too.

Re: Sky HDR

@rozel

I love Bosch also, but since the lockdown, Prime and all the streaming services have throttled bitrates, hopefully they will be back to normal soon, so the amazing picture you're been seeing will be even more exceptional.

Morning @A1exG

I am shocked 😮

So are we saying that all along the "The same boxes have HDR in Italy" conversation was true ?

Nature would certainly be a good platform to demonstrate the format at its best

Channel 130 I hear

@mike+simmonds all we know for sure is that the 1TB UHD and  2TB version 3 are definitely capable, also the V2 2TB boxes have exactly the same specs as the boxes Italy are using

Re: Sky HDR

@Oyodi  What picture quality deterioration are you noticing exactly?

I am aware of the so called throttling but I haven't noticed on either netflix or Amazon to be honest..  My only niggle is with my TV in that it accepts HDR (any format bar Dolby Vision) but once everything is up and running (I use either my phone or the Harmony remote to trigger certain "activities"), I have to switch inputs on my receiver to trigger the HDR properly - a very common experience with my TV.  So for instance with Bosch I wait for the opening screens and pause on a good one, switch to a fifferent input on my receiver and immediately switch it back to the correct one and boom! you see the HDR as it should be seen.  For some reason initially the colours look a bit washed out.  But other than that, I haven't noticed any deterioration before lock-down started on 23rd March to now.  So I would welcome your own observations please - cheers
