Re: Sky HDR

@PBS83 I doubt very much if a tv can do HDR10 it will not be able to implement HLG also.

In which case, your doubts would be unfounded. HDR10 essentially IS HDR when TVs claim it on the packaging.

HLG arrived to the party later on and a lot of manufacturers didn't take it seriously at first so support is still patchy, particularly on older generation sets. The vast majority of sets manufactured in the past 2-3 years 'should' support it but it's not guaranteed.

Re: Sky HDR

@JOHNGALLEY I had an LG pre 2016 that had HDR10 but didn't have HLG.

Well mine has been confirmed by it's hardware that my V1 2TB box will not get the update.. so i asked Sky to provide  a box that will .. and was told not until a HDR package was in place which will be chargeable .. so my box would then prevent me from upgrading to the HDR package and at that point they will provide a pathway to change to an HDR-compatible box.. so , so much for those who posted if it were not for the Virus Sky would have replaced V1 boxes for V2/3 ones .. absolute bull.

I think it is more likely that what you were told by the call centre was "absolute bull" and they just don't have the process in place yet to replace old V1 boxes.

The Samsung KS series which I have from 2016 had HDR10, but no HLG via HDMI until it was added in a later update in 2018. So not all HDR10 TVs can display HLG.

Re: Sky HDR

Time to get on the phone tomorrow. No need to be paying the same as a new customer for a service where they get extra features.

Re: Sky HDR

@PBS83  I really have to disagree.  There are so many issues relating to TV's and the PQ with DV.  Dimming is the issue amongst others.  And am bound to say that Netflix in particular bundles DV and HDR together so you don't know if it is actually one or the other.  So many issues across most TV's.  Sky's HLG is, I think the best for broadcasters but we will see tomorrow.  I guess though that it won't be as good as viewing via my wee Roku Streaming Stick +

Have you been happy to pay for UHD content up to now?

You must clearly value the 11 hours worth of nature programming that will be available in HDR if it's enough to complain about. Must be worth a few pennies at least.

I'm sure life is already pretty stressful for the call centre staff at the moment... give them a day off and just wait for information on how to replace your box.

No stress at all now the soft lockdown is over. Dominic Cummings shown the country how to behave. I'm still paying for a service COVID or no COVID so want the same as the next person.

Sorry, this is my fault but just to be clear - the 'PQ' I refer to is Perceptual Quantizer (HDR10 and DV), which is a different format to Hybrid Log Gamma.

Regarding the dimming - this is commonplace with HDR in general. It should make the whites whiter and the blacks blacker, while maintaining detail. This is where the metadata comes in because HDR10 simply offers the same throughout; DV is constantly changing per scene. If you don't prefer it though, that's cool because that's your preference and nobody is going to argue with that. On a technical side though, DV is the better format in PQ HDR terms.

And regarding the identification of HDR format on Netflix - this is fairly easy actually. The flag will say 'HDR' when it's HDR10 and it'll say 'Dolby Vision' when it's not HDR 10 (it replaces the world Dolby with their logo).

Re: Sky HDR

I emailed the Executive Team a coupel days ago. They rang me today. The lady on the phone had no idea what HDR was, so went away to speak to the 'technical team.'She rang me back to tell me that nobody was even aware of an HDR service, so it looks like I'm stuck without HDR on my V1 box for now...

Re: Sky HDR

@tazza1984  Best of luck with that unless you are about to end your contract or are out of contract .. i still have 12 months and for all intent and purpose i was told to do one .. if  i was about to negotiate a new contract .. i am certain a V2/3 box would be dispatched to myself .. to replace a, as of tomorrow, an outdated box.

And this is the view of many millions of people around the country who have Sky installed - huge swathes have no idea what HDR is other than an icon they've seen on Netflix. However, advertise it and everybody suddenly wants it and demands to know why they're not not getting it when they're paying so much every month.

Good old British public.

Re: Sky HDR

@PBS83  As far as Sky goes i have no choice as to whether i value there 11 hours of HDR content .. because of having a box that can not be updated .. i have to do without yet people who are paying the same amount as myself can have the choice to watch that content or not.. down to their box..
