Done some digging on q box tech specs. It appears for those who are interested in this stuff, it's the hdmi connection on the old boxes that stops hdr being compatible. In order to send hdr/hlg or any flavour of hdr to your TV, you can you need hdmi 2.0 or greater. The older boxes have hdmi 4.1b. Fine for uhd but not the colour range and gammut of hdr formats.

A swap out for a newer compatible box will be the only future solution for those with v1s

It's not the HDMI version - the v1 boxes did indeed launch with 1.4, but that was upgraded in firmware to 2.0. That version is the minimum required for 2160p50 (the output format used by all Sky's UHD content). It's the chipset used - it simply can't handle the colour range.

Re: Sky HDR

@rscott where did you get the info about the chipset? I find that hard to believe it believe. Hdr isn't that processor hungry. With dynamic hdr which is constantly changing then I get that. But hlg and hdr10 is static.

Re: Sky HDR

@Chrisee  they also havent said categorically it  will be free either. they havent said the V1 boxes will be swapped out this year...thats two things sky could say now! to put this mess of a launch for V1 owners to rest.

Re: Sky HDR

@bob1234 that put my mind to rest. Meanwhile the channels launch yesterday was good, there's so many good documentaries to get through that weren't there before, it's all in one place. Now onto Disney Plus in 4K and I'll be happy.

Panasonic 50cx700 sky q 2tb, keep the 3d films, I am still watching those

Re: Sky HDR

Good Morning TV Boffs and Generally unhappy Subscribers, Lovely weather out there, ay...

Anyway, I'll ask here as one of you will know. I only have a V1 box (Terrible, I know. Letter to my Local MP is on it's way...) but have a "HDR Certified" 4k TV. However, the blurb is that I have all my TV Goodness "delivered by Dolby Vision HDR technology"

I Know (at least I think I do) that Dolby Vision is a seperate thing, but will I see a difference if/when I get a shiny new v2/3 box? Is all Dolby HDR, but not all HDR dolby?

Anyway, Carry on arguing. As you were...

Sky use the HLG variant of HDR, but if your TV supports Dolby Vision, it should support HLG as well.

At the moment, like pretty much every other company, Sky are operating with fewer staff than usual. Call centres can't operate at full numbers and not all engineers can work.

Although you may be happy to self install, many customers won't and will want an engineer visit, which places a bigger load on the reduced call centre.

As Sky told you, they're working on an upgrade process and it's been confirmed by Sky staff here and elsewhere that the ugprade programme will be in place before they roll out all the HDR content.

Re: Sky HDR hardware version 32B063

I would of thought the uptick in people being at home currently ordering Sky and some sort of worldwide, fatal pandemic would halt the giving out of stock to Hundreds of thousands of people all at once TBH. Plus I'm sure the manufacture of Boxes would of taken a hit in Recent months,

Re: Sky HDR

Anyone changing their picture settings to Vivid thinking that is showing the content in HDR is misguided. If your picture looks good on the setting you watch HD or UHD on, then it will look amazing when HDR kicks in. It will look vivid on its own without making any picture adjustments, if you've set up your TV to recognise HDR properly. It could well be that you're not actually getting HDR but then putting the TV to Vivid and thinking 'ooh this is bright and vibrant' - yes it is. You've put it on Vivid. It doesn't mean it's HDR.

And just as a recap:

v1 2tb boxes don't get HDR. (Sky have not yet announced what they will do regarding box changes for v1 owners, but I would imagine it would be on request once they have announced their plan for more HDR, rather than across all users, as many won't know what HDR is and will be happy with their boxes. It would be highly unlikely they'll charge as this would be penalising those who have been on Sky Q longest and have likely paid the most.)
