Re: Sky HDR

@Super+Anthony  Depends what you mean by massive. You might have to play around with your picture settings...brightness, contrast, HLG level etc. On my Samsung the colours are more vivid, it kinda brings it all to life if you follow me. Massive?...no. Significant?...yes

Re: Sky HDR

@GreenLantern On my Sony, I have set picture to Vivid, rather than Sports

Re: Sky HDR

@Rhonny  if i am on all the pages .. your point is .

My work is looking after a 96 year old with health issues .. better that than putting him in a home and then complaining that he is not looked after correctly.

I think the point of this thread is to discuss HDR being launched on the Sky Platform for some.

Did i state it was a breach of contract .

IMO you see everything from a Sky perspective which again to me that does not make that perspective the correct one.

Re: Sky HDR

@Super+Anthony

You might have covered this already, but as a Sony owner have you followed these steps to watch properly in HDR?

Set HDMI signal format to Enhanced format.
  1. Press the HOME button on the remote control.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select External inputs in the TV category.
  4. Select HDMI signal format and set to Enhanced format

@JOHNGALLEY

I'm not trying to score points. Let's just agree it's 0-0 and take our balls home.

Re: Sky HDR

@Jamie+Simmsyou're right about that. Malawi Wildlife Rescue is a very understated example of HDR (that looks even less so on my Sony FALD because I found it doesn't allow different settings between HDR and SDR via HLG/Sky box  and so have to strike a balance) but @Super+Anthony might be happy to find there is an American woman on there who is a little overly keen on use of the word super at any opportunity, lol

Re: Sky HDR

I see, that makes sense, when I've read the review for mine it said although it doesn't have HDR, it makes up in wider gammut, not sure what that means. Do you see a big difference with HDR, TBH I was already blown away with how good 4K is on this telly.

@Paulonthetelly I am sorry that like several hundred thousand others your Sky box doesn't support HDR. If it is any consolation I like the other Oracles have known for over 2 years that this car crash was coming. That Sky's management have not thought this through is a disgrace.

However HLG is HDR whatever you choose to believe, it was developed by the BBC and NHK for the broadcasters whose needs are different from streamers like Netfix or the movie studios. Sky adopted the standard from the beginning as their primary interest is as Sports broadcasters.

HDR content can be patchy, for various reasons, but when done well it is superb. There's a common misconception that the increased colour gamut equals brighter colours but that's not what it's about. It's not a case of turning up the contrast as such, it's about offering more natural colours - particularly gradients - and making the image more lifelike. Although not exclusive to UHD content, the addition of HDR (in all formats) is that killer ingredient it needs. Even HD HDR is great.

Re: Sky HDR

@Chrisee HLG is definitely HDR even watching Malawi (AND with settings 'dulled') I can still see the better contrast range and more vivid colours.

Re: Sky HDR

@Chrisee , I do agree with some of what you say. The facts are that Sky said they were bringing HDR in 2016. 4. Years  & 2 months later we are told that Q boxes V1 i.e those at launch were not & cannot handle HDR. Sky launched limited HLG content 27 May 2020 and we find out today. HDR covers a number of formats, HLG was chosen which dates well before the Q launch. Good to know finally that it was untrue .

Granted, it's been handled abysmally and I do feel for v1 box owners and I understand their frustrations, particularly with the lack of advance information regarding the boxes and the silence on any sort of plan going forward. I would have thought that'd be primed and ready as an instant sweetener, even in vague timescale terms, from today at least. There's a soft launch and then there's handling it terribly.

At the same time though, there's clearly nothing people can do other than wait. Yes, very disappointing for those affected, but it's done now and no amount of complaining will alter it. At least there's only an extremely limited amount of content available and we're not talking about things of major widespread interest.

...I've just been looking at BT's bundled offering. On the face of it the cost seems a bit lower for a similar package. They don't have HDR either, but I just feel that my long running dissatisfaction with Sky over their casual treatment of long time, higher spending customers is like howling at the moon and I need to do something about it.

As a BT TV customer who is returning to Sky because of how BT have introduced their new bundled offering I would recommend thinking very, very carefully before moving to them. Make absolutely certain you can have all the channels you actually want to watch together.

BT make Sky look utter novices when it comes to frustrating and mistreating their long-standing customers in my experience. 👍

I think it's also important to remember that whatever roadmap they had was likely to have been thrown into doubt when the sale went through and Comcast took over. I'm sure Comcast would have wanted to look at all plans to ensure it fitted with their own ideas first etc. It's important to look at things from all angles.
