Dolby Vision and Custom Picture Settings

Am I just being dumb, or am I correct in that when playing Altered Carbon on Netflix, with Dolby Amos and Dolby Vision active, the picture settings are all irrelevant as Vision takes them over?

reason being is that all the settings from Auto to Custom do nothing when watching this content.

Also, interestingly, when the film is playing and you are viewing the Sky Glass home UI you can see the backlight change as Vision controls it.

is this normal‽

@discodancers on most TVs by viewing content with a Dolby Vision that flag will switch the TV into its custom Dolby Vision mode with settings optimised for thst content.  So for example the backlight set at max and white point set etc. Some TVs allow users to change that settings without altering the SDR picture simply dont know if thst is possible on Glass.

If it's Dolby Vision IQ, yes.

The way Dolby Vision IQ works is by using the dynamic metadata encoded in Dolby Vision content in conjunction with an embedded light sensor in the TV, using the information to change the picture settings and display a more accurate picture.

Basically, Dolby Vision IQ can tell that you’re watching TV in a brightly lit room, where lots of dark details are getting lost. The TV will therefore be able to boost the brightness automatically without you having to go into the picture settings and do it yourself.

Re: Dolby Vision and Custom Picture Settings

@TimmyBGood @Chrisee thanks. So the only setting that seems to be available is the Dolby Vision Picture mode - Dark to Bright. This actually does something.

@discodancers you know more than we do as neither @TimmyBGood or myself have a Glass TV yet. 😢

I don't think Netflix and Glass are using the Dolby Vision IQ system but I could be wrong @tarbat do you know if it is likely?

Highly unlikely that Glass is using anything other than plain Dolby Vision, the same as Netflix uses.

The 'IQ' part is down to the TV, not service. It uses the ambient light sensor to adjust the picture accordingly.

Pretty sure if Sky Glass had IQ, they'd have advertised it instead of simply saying it's DV compatible.

Re: Dolby Vision and Custom Picture Settings

@d2hHowever the Program is dynamically changing the backlight during the Vision film. Is this the local area dimming working?

Re: Dolby Vision and Custom Picture Settings

Dolby Vision capable TVs usually have preset modes labelled Dolby Vision Dark, Bright or Vivid, along with Film-maker mode sometimes. These will over-ride any user settings for other forms of HDR, though can be tweaked on some TVs, but probably not on Glass.

The backlight variations you are seeing are to do with local dimming, to try and keep the blacks looking blacker. On some TV's the dimming algorithm can end up being distracting so personally I turn it off, but I don't know if this is possible on Glass. It is possible on Panasonic TV's.

Highly unlikely, but you never know. Can it be selected - there should be DV Bright, DV Dark, and DV IQ?

I'd also be surprised if you can't make any picture adjustments whilst in Dolby Vision mode. Take my Panasonic TV as an example, about the only settings you can't change in Dolby Vision modes is:

  • Dynamic HDR Effect - this is managed by the Dolby Vision dynamic metadata
  • HDR Brightness Enhancer - unneccesary since Dolby Vision manages this

Example screenshots showing everything else that can be adjusted in Dolby Vision mode.  HDR Auto Brightness achieves a similar effect to DV IQ, but using Panasonics own algorythms and ambient sensor.

If there are any Sky Glass TV owners in the IV6 postcode area, I'd happily visit and run a full calibration on the TV to see how well it's calibrated out-of-the-box.

Re: Dolby Vision and Custom Picture Settings

@fizzdisco You can switch local dimming off on sky glass. However it makes Altered Carbon on Netflix in Dolby vision look a bit too uniform. Personal preference I guess

Re: Dolby Vision and Custom Picture Settings

Did anyone ever find out if you can disable Dolby Vidion altogether?
Trying to watch things that has it enabled by default is HORRIBLE on sky glass, it's far too dark and there's not enough colour.
Would much rather watch with the HDR settings that I personally setup for how I like my picture to look but instead, I'm left with an image that looks like it's been dragged back to 50% backlight.

Dolby Vision does not work for this tv in the slightest.
