Broadband Speed Variance New Account vs 4 Years Ago

Just wondering if anyone can advise why I might be seeing such lower speeds than expected on my new installation os Sky Superfast.

I'm seeing about 35mbps consistent in a speed test, however I expected closer to 67mbps (which I got consistently on manual speed testing the last time i was with sky (about 4 years ago).

I have a samknows whitebox and happen to have a graph of the connection from back then where you

can see it hovering above 60mbps:

Then heres today.. (the huge drop is me leaving virgins 350mb service, due to it being fast but unreliable), and you can see the line is sitting around 35mbps from installation..

I know it will be in the profiling period for the first 10 days.. but usually that results in the speed dropping off and not climbing doesnt it? Plus it already seems to have decided on 35mb as its just sticking at that speed 24/7 pretty much.

Nothing has changed my end other than the Sky Q router instead of the old SR-102 I used to have.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Sam

According to your line attenuation d3 is just outside the viable range to register any speed on that spectrum..  at the minute . May be after 10-14 day dlm that will fall within a viable range. Also what were you given as a minimum guaranteed line speed. ?

Ah ok, thanks for the reply, I'll wait and see after dlm.. what is the acceptable range? Anything I can do to try and persuade it into that range? (I dont mind fitting th eoruter within a couple CM of the master socket with a tiny cable if that might help).

The minimum was 33.5 during the order process, although on the My Broadband I think it now shows 32Mb,  so thats being met, the estimate I mentioend above was just what I used to get on my old sky connection, so I was hoping I'd see similar (or better ideally as i expect the technology has improved a bit in the last 4 years)

Thanks,

Sam

Line attenuation of above 60-65db on ds3 will not produce any speed. But is important to get it registering as in ideal circumstances ds3 can account to up too 45Mbps of your speed. So leave it for a while and get back to us if nothing has changed. By the way what is your minimum guarantee?

Whilst tech has improved copper lines have degraded

The line attenuation can be used to extrapolate distance from cabinet to house so any change in distance from router to mastersocket would be miniscule

Nope: FTTC is still FTTC and won't now change as it's a technological dead-end.  The 'improvement' is in the introduction of 'Ultrafast' technologies working on different principles, primarily by replacing all the copper with an optical path .

Seems like quite a drop over 4 years though.. Guess all that line rental to BT/Openreach isnt paying for maintaining lines!

Thanks for your help anyway, I will leave it and see what happens after the dlm has completed.

Sam

Guess I could also be on a different pair back to the cabinet or from there to the exchange.. which is out of my control.

Crosstalk due to near capacity cabinet etc etc isp's will likely do nothing until below the minimum. Just hoping its dlm 👍

Re: Broadband Speed Variance New Account vs 4 Years Ago

Haha.. I already know my cabinet is at capacity as I looked when i decided to leave virgin mid week  and it was available, but when i went to order at the weekend, it was full and I had to wait 3 or 4 days before being able to order superfast. Think I was lucky that I didnt have a longer wait!

Thanks,
Sam
