Boardwalk Empire on Soundbox

Hi,

 

When starting to rewatch Boardwalk Empire tonight, we noticed that the speech was very muffled and alomst non-existent, the music sounded okay though. However, when we switched the source of the Soundbox to Optical it sounded fine.

 

Would this be an issue with the programme, or with the settings between the Q box and the Soundbox when used together via the HDMI source instead of the TV wide optical source?

 

(The current Soundbox settings on the Q box are just the 'normal' settings, with the Q Sound option on but no selected sound mode).

I've just tried to recreate your findings on season 1 episode 1 but I found it ok both on HDMI and optical 

 

I did notice on HDMI that the speech was slightly clearer (and with less bass) with HDMI digital output (on the Sky box) set to Normal rather than to Dolby Digital - and again perhaps slightly clearer through optical 

It could be that with the Settings on Dolby digital the Soundbox is not doing a great job of interpreting the sound mix. I have experienced that from time to time - but I'm not really hearing muffled speech on Boardwalk Empire. 

can I ask - is your Soundbox enclosed at all at the sides ?  That could make it sound a bit muffled - especially if the soundbox is pushing the speech through the side speakers

 

Also - do you definitely have your TV speakers set to zero ?

This is very much an isolated problem with the programme, the Soundbox isn't enclosed at all.

It could be the download went wrong somewhere, but I'm not really sure.

 

As I said, the opening title music was okay, pretty much normal, but any of the other sounds, such as talking and background sounds were very muffled and the volume of it was significantly lower compared to the title music, this all on the HDMI source... once on the Optical source these sounds were okay.

 

The TV volume hasn't been touched since it was set to 0, we tried to see what it sounded like through the main TV speakers and while it also sounded okay, we had to set the volume to 75 in order to hear it, when before prior to us having the Soundbox, the TV volume was usually was on 15 to 20 as a normal level.

You would think the version I downloaded would be the same as the one you downloaded (Mine is the HD version by the way) and certainly for me both speech and music were ok ( not wonderful perhaps) but definitely clear. Does it improve at all if you put your HDMI output to normal rather than Dolby digital ?

 

The actual volume level for me on Boardwalk Empire sounds the same as my other content 

 

Just to see - any change if you delete an episode, then go to manage / deleted and 'delete forever' - then download it again

Well...

 

Nothing was changed settings wise overnight, and now it's fine. So I'm not really sure what went wrong, but thanks for the help.

Not quite sure what went on but so long as it's ok then happy days 🙂

 

I thought last night - maybe if you experience anything similar - a "power off at the mains for 1 minute" of your Sky box and Soundbox always worth a try
